Down to 2 choices a .223 Savage or Mossberg

So I am standardizing on .223/5.56 and want something handy so I am down to a Savage Hog Hunter and Mossberg MPV Patrol.

I am leaning towards the Mossberg as it take AR mags and seems better built. Not interested in a .308 been there done that just need something to shoot out to 300 yards and share ammo with my CAR15. :) Don't need a .308 for paper or gophers.

What's your experience with both rifles?

The Savage is much higher quality than the Mossberg. The Mossberg feels cheaper in every aspect except for the stock, the one I handled had the laminate stock which of course is better than the synthetic on the Savage. I believe the MVP Patrol has a synthetic stock as well, and if it is the same quality as the one on the Mossberg 4x4 its even worse than the Savage. Neither are great, but the Mossberg just feels cheaper. The bolt, trigger, action, etc all feel far superior on the Savage. I haven't felt a bolt as sloppy as the one on the Mossberg MVP. The Savage is not a true 556 rifle, while the Mossberg is advertised as one. My personal experience would steer me away from the Mossberg, I am a fan of their shotguns but not their rifles. The only way I would consider the MVP is if running AR mags and 556 ammo made up for the lack of everything else it offers. I have experience with several samples of each.
 
We examined both brands when searching for a simple .223 bolt gun for product testing and went with the Savage. The Mossberg MVP doesn't receive stellar reviews.
 
Savage... I have the pro hunter model 11 in .223... Accutrigger, sweet action......shoots poa and feels nice quality....may change the stock at some point, but great value. ...

In addition to what others have said, my Savage 11 Trophy Hunter has quite a long throat.
I was unable to push a long loaded bullet into the lands.
This would help decrease the pressure the same way it does in 5.56.
Your mileage might vary though.

ps: one day I'll make a chamber cast to be able to measure the freebore.
 
Savage for sure...Had a lightweight Varminter for a while and would easily shoot sub MOA...very accurate rifle...Was a little heavy for me is why I sold it. But a really good bench rifle..
 
I have the MVP Laminate Target style stock and MAN IS IT A TACK DRIVER. I have sub moa groupings with factory ammo. It has a trigger that is clean and crisp which feels the exact same as my accutrigger on my savage 22. I grabbed the MVP when it first came out and the price has gone up 200 since then and I think it will continue to rise. I cant speak to the Patrol version but i am very very happy with mine.

oh and BTW can you say LAR Mags??? nothing but good times
 
I quite like my MVP Varmint. I bought it because I liked the fit and style of it. Like you, I also wanted something that would share AR mags and ammo with my Norc AR and T97.
I am planning on buying their MVP Varmint in 7.62/.308 when it becomes available in Canada so I can share mags and ammo with my Norc M305.
 
you really can't go wrong with a savage. That being said, hold them both at the store, and operate them, see which "fits" better for you. Sight unseen for sheer quality and accuracy, Savage wins.

Hmm, is Mossberg still using a "splined-on-one-side-but-not-splined-on-the-other" press fit handle on it's bolts?

Like the infamous "Night Train" bolt that could come back into your face?

Oh and BTW can you say .50 Beowulf mags (14 or 15 rounds of .223 depending on the particular mag???) nothing but good times , there fixed it for ya
