Got it down to these two for my next 9mm. I have had plastic and all metal before in many diff models. The smith is a little cheaper with night sights than the sig P226R CPO. I have read sooo much about both these pistols and they seem both to be a good purchase however if anyone owns both or have shot both would like to hear your opinion to help me decide. thanks

With out a doubt I would choose the 226 over the M&P. I find the trigger pull on the sigs very smooth. The make of them are really ergonomically friendly - all the buttons are in the perfect spots. Also the sig is double action/single action, whereas the M&P is a double action only, thats a personal preference i guess but I prefer the sig

I have both. Get the Sig. The single action trigger pull is just beautiful. The M&P is nice and I enjoy shooting it but it's no Sig. And I'm a die hard Glock guy BTW.

hori,

Have you had the opportunity to shoot both models yourself...or if not - at least handle them both? I think this is the best way to go - if possible.

no unfortunately.... like all my other pistol purchases I have to ask for the opinions and experience of the CGN`ers and go from there...:D

i own the blackwater tactical and an m&p9. If i had to choose, it'd be the sig, but i like the guns equally for different reasons. Im always so careful not to stratch or put a mark on the sig... but i really dont care with the m&p9. its my "truck" pistol, which i have no issues letting friends have fun with at the range, holstering, or anything else

if they are both the same price, go with the sig

I've handled both and shot M&P's in both 9mm and .40. The M&P is significantly lighter, fits nicely into your hand and is also easy to handle. It's also friendlier for smaller hands (if your wife/children might use it on occasion). IMO it's a great gun for a little under $800. That being said, when you spend $1300 on a Sig... you get a $1300 gun.

What do you plan to do with it. If you intend to do any competition shooting the DA/SA trigger on the Sig will cause issues with your split times and/or first to second shot placement. Also in my hands the M&P shoots better at speed - both quicker and more accurate.

I own both and the Sig is definitely a better quality gun no question, but there's a reason a Sig is $1300 and an M&P is $650. Take into consideration wether you want an external hammer (Sig) or striker fired (M&P), or if you care. As well as other things feel, look, weight etc.

I was in the same spot you are! Sig or M&P?? I always liked the Sig a bit better but ended up getting the M&P because i didn't want to spend the money on a the Sig. Well about 3 months later i was walking out of the gun shop with a Sig! I shoot it twice as much as the M&P easily. I just like it more and think it's a better gun, that's just me though.

Consider the money too. The M&P is half the price, and not a bad gun at all. No sense having a $1300 gun and no money for ammo!!

Tough call...the DA trigger pull on the SG is slow, the manual of arms is more complex, and they require a LOT of practise to not drag the first round or else wing the second over the top...assuming you are running the gun fast and hard, anyway. If all you do is casually plink it will never be an issue.

On the other hand the P226 is a very durable gun and the older, better, stamped slide models can be had for the same price as an M&P.

Shoot them both, buy whichever you enjoy more.
