Immediately can have a whole range of meanings depending on the situation. I sincerely doubt that a CO is going to charge someone for leaving a dead bird in their dekes for a while if other birds are working.

I shot a duck last week that locked its wings and sailed out about 300 yds to settle in the middle of the lake. Had I followed the letter of the law and put the boat in to get it right away, it would have swam or flown into the weeds and been lost. As it was I watched him for about 5 minutes and could see it start doing the "funky chicken". Then I put in and picked him up.

The INTENT of the law is to get the folks who shoot birds and make no attempt to retrieve them. If a CO were to charge me for the above situation or for leaving a dead bird in the dekes for a few minutes he would be a dink of the highest order.
