downloading a 458 Win mag to 45-70/Ruger #1, thoughts?

The easiest way to get cast bullet reduced rifle loads working is to buy some IMR 4759. It was designed for midrange loads, fills the case and lights easily. There's enough published data around too.

Just a quick update for anyone following this thread. I caught myself loading large PISTOL primers last night.....this may be the main issue I was having. I'm going to be testing these loads again in the next week or so, so take any of the previous problems with a grain of salt, as the problem may have been the use of wrong primers all along.

Almost forgot about this thread. I haven't done much testing, as I went with 405's and 45 grains IMR-4198, and still had hangfires. This is just to clarify this rifle has a long throat, and does not apply to other rifles, as others have had no troubles with lower charges of this powder.

Andy, you are totally right about this bullet not being suitable, at least not with this powder. It did seem to work okay with 2400 which I'm sure is pressure related, but I'm not looking for that low a velocity. I jammed a 405 grn bullet into the lands , and used a dowel to measure, and I'd need a c.o.l. of around 3.65 to jam the lands. In other words, this bullet would need to be sitting .18 OUT of the case to bump the lands.

I have some IMR-4227 that I'll try next, simply for the fact that I'm too stubborn to give up. I really should just look for a non bore riding pug nosed bullet though.:p
