I want to use my new shorty M14 in the next CQB. The recoil of full power ammo is going to slow me down in some stages where it is an advantage to shoot real fast.

I made up some ammo using 147gr FMJ bullets and 4895 powder. I would normally load about 44 gr of this for full power ammo. I loaded 5 of each, in 1 gr lower increments, all the way down to 25 gr, and shot them at 50 yards for accuracy and cycling.

Usually in a test like this I get to the point where the gun does not cycle for 100% of the shots. Not this time. The 25 gr loads cycled just fine and accuracy was OK, too.

This is a bone stock rifle. No fancy adjustable gas regulator.

I decided to load 27gr, and made up a batch of them for the next match.

This ammo would be perfect for a youngster or girl friend who does not want to be beat up with full recoil. I am guessing it would work to 100 yards.

You can load the ammo mild, or pull the bullet on milsurp and re-throw a lower powder charge.

I have done the same thing with 223 ammo, reducing the factory charge from 25 gr to 18 gr. It cycles 100% in my AR-15.

Accuracy at close range was the same as normal ammo. Felt recoil is much reduced. Still lots of noise, but no real kick.

I have also pulled apart 7.62x39 ammo and reduced the factory powder charge from 25 gr to 18 gr. Still runs the gun, but much less recoil for short range rapid fire.
