No this is not another "How much is it worth so I can sell it on the ee" thread. I pick up a full length ross sporter & a DP rifle with bayo at the woodstock gun show. My plan is to combine the two rifles & sell the left overs. Is the DP worth anymore than the sum of its parts? Should I keep them as a set so a future owner could have it either way?

I would say no as to if it's worth more than the sum of its parts. I'd only buy a dp if it was the right price.

You never know when the stock will fail if it's dp marked. I'd be thinking that if I shoot it the stock may crack and I'd be out more money getting it repaired. In my mind whether you replace the barreled action or not, I personally still would not shoot it. As such i would not swap parts. But that's just one gents opinion.

The DP is basically only good to:

1) display as-is
2) build a cool cutaway rifle if you have a milling machine
3) rob for parts to complete the other gun.

I would do No.3, then ship me the remains so I can build a cutaway when I have time for another project ;) I'll post pics here... lol.

I did that several years ago with the help of a good friend. He helped with the milling machine work.

It took parts from several "bubba'd" Ross Rifles to gather all the parts needed.

It took about 40 hours work to complete.

We even did a "cut away" of a 303 round containing a glass vial with the strings of cordite.

Not shown is a section of the barrel cut away showing the rifling inside.

One of the Indian DPs, with the pin welded through the breech of the barrel, the stock being notched on both sides? Don't know that one of these has any particular value. Lots of parts to use in restoration of the sported one.
If this is what you are dealing with, I would suggest doing armourers' style dovetailed repairs of the notches in the stock, rather than trying to fit semicircular patches. Armourers' repairs don't scream "this is a stock from an Indian DP" quite as loudly.

I actually don't think it's an Indian DP, although I could be wrong. I was there when he inspected and bought it. The DP has a nice stock, with good Ross markings. I didn't see (but didn't spend as much time as I should have inspecting it closely) the Indian marks and stock disk I've seen on others.
There was a gent there who was former RCEME. He said they removed the wood from the stock behind the bolt so it wouldn't hit the wood. It had what looked like a purposely done removal back behind, not a chunk that broke out. Could be wrong but it made me think it might have been from Canadian service.

At any rate, it had a nice dark walnut stock, all the parts, bands, nosecap to make another rifle live again.

If it is a Canadian DP, it shouldn't be broken for parts. Legitimate collectible. If it is an Indian deact/DP, with the pin welded crosswise through the barrel, it would be a different situation.

I think the cross pin is there...if I'd had more time to study the markings....I could guess better.

The Indian DP wood I had years ago wasn't nearly as nice as this one. This one is really dark and smooth. Nice Canadian markings too.
