So I just clicked the 'buy now" button for one of these at the Grouse River 48 hour sale (reg $899 for $599).....completely spur of the moment and price driven! I know these sometimes get mixed reviews but many seem to think them good value for an entry level AR. It's intended as a occasional, casual use, range toy. So, did I make a mistake or will this be OK as a starter?

Secondly, I'd be interested in any advice on sights. I'm thinking red dot but perhaps the 2x mag in the Bushnell Trophy might be nice for these aging eyes. SFRC has them for $299 http://www.theammosource.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=21_560_567&products_id=5670 ....thoughts?....other suggestions (don't want to get into anything more expensive than this on an entry level gun and in fact less $$ would be OK too).

I'm a newb in the black rifle world so any advice is appreciated

They're fine for a starter. I'd certainly pick one of them up ahead of a Norinco. Note that it uses a "commercial" spec buffer tube (which are round instead of tapered), so you need to buy a Commercial spec stock if you choose to replace it.

Choice of optic depends on your intended use... If you're tearing up CQB style I would recommend a simple red dot like a Bushnell TRS25, Vortex SPARC, Aimpoint or EoTech. If you're mostly static and at 100m or beyond I would suggest something like the Bushnell AR 1-4x (which does an OK job at CQB on 1x mag).

I have no experience with the Trophy you've suggested, but it kinda looks like a budget ACOG. With a bit of practice you can run these like a RDS using the Bindon Aiming Concept (google it). IMHO 2x magnification is neither fish nor fowl... Not enough magnification to help at distance, but enough to make CQB a little trickier.

Get some Beowulf mags before they're all gone and have fun!

Thanks for the advice. I have already a TRS25 on a Buck Mark .22 carbine. I know they are also available with a 1" riser. Would that be needed for this application?

I don't think there are iron sights on this. It's sold as "optics ready" and there are no iron sights shown in the photos. I realize i could add them but not sure why i would bother?

Ahhh, missed that it was the one without a front sight base. In that case, you don't need to worry about co-witness. And no, BUIS are certainly not necessary, especially if you aren't competing with it. I would still think the riser is in order to put the optic in the correct position for your eye. It would be very low and hard to get a cheek weld if it was mounted right on the pic rail, but YMMV.
