alright so im thinking about diving into the AR world my local gun shop carries the NORC with the 14.5 barrel for $695 and the DPMS Oracle with the 16" barrel for $849. im familier with the quality of Norinco but i have never owned a product from DPMS. are they worth the extra $150? im gonna look through other threads about them on CGN but im looking for a direct comparison. thanks in advance and pardon my ignorance.

For that small difference, I opted for the DPMS after seeing a Norc at my LGS that looked like they threw a can of black paint at it. Having said that, it looks like the Dominion Arms model from CanAm has a much nicer and reliable finish so I'm even thinking of getting a DA myself. I haven't even had the chance to shoot my DPMS yet, lol.

Fit and finish is the biggest differences.

Lot's of Norcs are painted and fitting aftermarket parts is sometimes difficult.

I've been going over the same thing - my 2 cents: I've owned neither but read a lot of reviews...went to two local ranges that have the dpms oracle as range guns...the first range had their dpms out for repairs (their extremely high round count Norc was still running for range shooting) ...went to the second range and rented the Oracle only to have it malfunction and stop cycling while I was shooting it...I was not impressed with the Oracle after and I took it off of my short list so to speak. ..I'm sure there are great running Oracles out there but due to my limited experience with it I won't be buying one personally - doesn't mean you shouldn't, just my 2 cents.. I also realize range guns take a beatin' which is a definite factor in my experience ..it seems the Norc has really good reliability but I am still hesitant to buy since I'd rather not support China and would really prefer to buy North American made.. One day I will get an ATRS but can't afford one right now - those rifles look amazing.

I have and have had quite a few AR's, Norinco's, BCM, DD, LMT (shortly a STI)... the Norinco is fantastic for the money, I have never had an issue with part fitment ever. They shoot accurate and reliably and have some nice features from factory that some more expensive AR's do not, IE Ambi controls and sling swivels.

My norc got a lot of hand me down parts from my other AR's as I built them up over the years, I currently run my 10.5" norc with a DD trigger group and some MOE handguards, grip and a M93 milspec stock and a CMMG 22LR conversion. All parts went on with no hassle. I actually found the fit and finish of my norc to be very good, the metal treatments resist scratching better than my DDM4V5.

In my opinion, the Norc is great value, I would take a Norc over the DPMS at that price because you will have some change left over for ammo or even a few upgrades. The DPMS is good, both guns are essentially the same in terms of function, the Norc has a few extra features and more barrel length options.

Cheers

I will say my M4 is a DPMS kit sans lower gun, on a Dlask lower. It's going on 10 years now without a hiccup. Anchor Harvey forged upper, chromed carrier, only downside if you could call ir that is the bore is not chrome lined. But it is accurate, reliable, and I would never get rid of it.

The DPMS Oracle is a flat top compared to the Norc with the carry handle, so if optics are an eventuality (and when isn't it, lol), the DPMS already has some rail for scope mount. That said, I found the rail could have been a bit longer or at least could have had a rail on the top of the hand guard to facilitate optics along with BUIS. Still haven't had a chance to shoot my damn DPMS, maybe in the new year.

Huh? Every new norinco is a flat top with detachable carry handle

Some retailers were carrying the dpms for $750 and at that point might as well spend the extra 50

Really? My bad then, I haven't been looking that closely lately I guess. I am on the verge of ordering a DA so I'll have to check that out.

edit: I was aware of the detachable handle but thought an aftermarket rail assembly (like needed on an SKS for example) was required. So much the better for my near-future DA, lol.
