"Dragon's Breath"

Dragon's Breath From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Dragon's breath usually refers to a zirconium-based pyrotechnic shotgun round. When fired, a gout of flame erupts from the barrel of the gun (up to 30 ft). While it has no tactical uses, the visual effect it produces is impressive, similar to that of a short ranged flamethrower. The shell is expensive when compared to other shells. It cannot be used in a semi-automatic shotgun, as it is a very low power round and will not produce enough recoil energy to cycle the next shot, causing the weapon to jam. Dragon's breath rounds are banned in many locations due to their inherent danger

I'm thinking gunpowder mixed with magnesium powder would have a similar effect. Magnesium burns really hot though, might torch your barrel.

I knew someone would put 2 & 2 together, buy the cheapest shotgun you can and go to the junkyard and get a piece of an old VW, use a drill and mix the shavings with some gunpowder. Pretty simple. I just wait for a rainy day and off you go. Use helium baloons for targets and enjoy!!

What do you think they are, maybe a regular load of red-dot under a cardboard wad and a stiff load of phosphorous?

Real redneck stuff but... ;)

Once upon a time in a land far far away a friend of mine tried to duplicate the "dragons breathe" effect.

He actually had great success according to various reports.

Upon deciding that he no longer needed (after all he had perfected it!) to attach the donor shotgun to a fixed object, he touched one off while holding it.

This resulted in him being taken away in an ambulance due to the massive blood loss resulting from the rather large chunk of his forearm which had been vaporized.... (It was/is really quite impressive actually and has resulting in some "bar set" winnings...)

One of the theories of "what went wrong" is that the primer charge pushed a mass of un-ignited powder down the barrel where it subsequently completed it's ignition causing a huge pressure spike, which resulted in a forged biakal (one of the strongest shotguns available) 12g single barrel shot-gun catastrophically disassembling itself.

My recommendation is: DO NOT experiment with this idea....(except from a remote location)

P.S. The doctors told my friend that if he worked at it, physio might regain him 10% use of his arm.
So he told them to F-off, went back to work & has probably regained 90% on his own....

Welcome to OFT 101...

They have a shotgun on display at Ellwood Epps in Ontario that someone was attempting to make dragons breath in. Blew the gun up.
