Dragunov sniper rifles availability?

.
A little bit of truth, hype, and "internet facts" in a lot to the posts to this thread.

The Dragunov, while a good rifle, was intended to give a good marksman a fairly accurate rifle that would result in hits over the extended range of 300 to 1000 meters, where an AK-47 was not so accurate. It is generally more accurate with the 184 grain 7.62x54R cartridges than the ordinary Russian Ball.

I have fired a few of the original Russian Dragunov rifles, and really I have not been impressed with the accuracy of it. I would agree that for the price a person might pay for a Dragunov, there are quite a few more suitable rifles if you want accuracy.

If I may add to Buffdogs insight regarding the SVD. The terms "sniper" and "marksmen" while at first blush look/sound and sort of share the same roles are actually somewhat different. What I have been told by others FAR more knowledgeable then I the role of a SVD armed marksman is to deliver WELL aimed shots for the AK armed rifle squad. The doctrine goes back to the dark days of WW2 when vast amounts of PPSH41 armed soldiers where common. The idea was the simple, minimumly trained soldier, with his PPSH41 and 71 round drums just had to get the rounds (lots) going in the right direction. Aimed, deliberate shots where the marksmans role within the squad (Note: one marksman is in each squad). When the AK superceded the PPSH41 the doctrine and training was carried over and the role is unchanged from the days of the Mosin Nagant for todays SVD with the AK firing in bursts.
