Hi all,

I did shoot my dream sniper rifle the Soviet Dragunov last week! This iconic rifle is unfortunately prohibited so I had to drive south and pay to shoot it. What a wonderful trigger and super precise rifle! I Loved it! The best $30 US spent during my short U.S vacation.

Could you mod a Valmet? I have no idea if any of the furniture would interchange. Sucks that valmets are so stupid expensive though.

An actual Dragunov is expensive in the States too. Even a PSL is expensive. I remember word that CSA was trying to produce a .308 Vz 58. Would be a pretty cool gun to build into a Dragunov look alike. They even had a prototype photo of it but I guess they never successfully made one.

Go price a valmet against a vepr, psl or anything else on those lines. If you want something built as nice as a valmet, even in the US, you are going to pay.

Valmet can be had for around a starting price of 2300 down there. Here too if you are smart about it.

why is the dragonuv prohibited??? it is only a semi auto rifle/dmr/sniper rifle?

Correct me if im wrong please. i want to know.

Well - despite the fact that it shares no parts, operates using a totally different system, fires a totally different cartridge, and has a totally different reason for existing - it's an AK variant. Why else?

I have two of them and don't know why they are. Barrel length alone should give it a pass! Plus a good norinco m14 can shoot as good as or better.
Back in the day, my springfield usgi m14 with ART 3x9 shot better.

Yah the only thing the SVD has over the M1a is probably the thumb hole stock, which is very comfy, but IMO the pistol grip on the SVD is a little to square shaped.

And 2 MOA accuracy, from what I've read.Only ever got to fondle one Romanian made Dragunov in Montana years ago and at the time was $2000 US.......Interesting human ranging scope though........Harold

you must have experienced a really worn-out copy.

I had the pleasure of firing a Dragunov in Trashcanastan. I was surprised by the crisp trigger, it shot well and was fairly accurate for a beat up old gun, the recoil was far less then expected. I did not like sight pattern, had way to much going on, the model I shot Had no cheek weld and a sight picture was not quick to get into by any means. Over all not a bad old rifle
