Well,

I drank a pitcher of Kool Aid I guess. I ordered a shorty from Frontier two months ago and was quite happy with the rifle. From my limited range time I would have to say it is a 1.5" gun at the moment with Federal Blue Box 150gr. Of course the front sight was canted to the side slightly, but the initial rounds were on target and windage was good. Took it for a few hikes in pursuit of game, but was not skillful enough with my hunting technique(consider myself an armed hiker). The rifle was fine to carry all day. I am a back pack hunter and generally put on a lot of km in a day. The one thing I noticed is that the opening in the stock around where the mag goes is had very sharp edges and made carrying a little uncomfortable. That was easily remedied with some steel wool. Oh and the noisy sling, a hair elastic(don't tell the wife) and duct tape fixed that.

Today its big brother arrived from Marstar. The sight is canted on this one too, but the other way. Some parts seem more refined while others are less. Look forward to taking this one to the range and seeing how it performs.

I intend to work up some loads with some 165gr projectiles over IMR 3031 for both in the near future.

If I get my act together and bag some game you'll see some pics in the hunting thread.

Cheers,

Chris

Welcome to the club.! I've been happy with both my shorty and long rifles.

The long rifle can get 2" MOA shooting prone with open sights (perhaps it would be better of a proper bench rest) and I have gotten good at hitting a 200m with the shorty standing (with a Bushnell TRS-1 and UTG scout mount). I'll need to exercise more to keep my arms steady after the first 3-5 shots, but think they're both more than accurate enough for hunting. Further tweaks will come in the future as time and funds permit, but they've already performed pretty well in stock configuration.

I've had an opportunity to go over the rifle a bit prior to going to the range and have found only one major issue, well not to major. The rear sight elevation knob would not really index at all. It would kind of skip over the detents in the receiver. So upon closer inspection I noticed two issues. One the detents were not very deeply formed and the tops of the ridges were almost peened over. Two the elevation knob indexing point was not a trapezoidal shape, but a square. I called Marstar to see if they had any suggestions on how to fix this, I would rather fix it my self than ship it off. They weren't able to provide any suggestions, but I must say they stand behind the product 100%. They said just ship it to use at their cost and they would fix it or replace it if I couldn't fix it on my own. Nice! Good stuff Marstar. To make a long story short I took some needle files and shaped the elevation knob to the correct shape, very slowly I might add, and also cleaned up the detents. Now she indexes like the shorty.

On to the range report.

Had a chance this am to take it out and sight in and calibrate the rear sight. So after a few rounds I had it sighted in at 100 and calibrated. My last 3 shots were at 200yds with the elevation knob at 2.

Not bad, sub 1.5" MOA. It was really hard to see the target as I was facing south into the sun.

Just had time to measure.

That is 2.2" at 200 yards with open sights. There are people asking how accurate these rifles are, well this group is 1.1 MOA. The shorty I have shoots about the same. 150gr Federal or 165gr handloads.

I really have to stay away from these threads! They're costing me money....:)
I've been wanting a m305b (shorty) for a while but my smithing skills with these rifles are zero. With all the negative (some scary) comments about them I stayed away....until Barney listed one that he would "tweak" before selling. (I was all over it) Great peace of mind knowing one of the "Best" gave it the green light.
It's in my possession now and its a keeper. Looks exactly like yours ^^.
I'm leaving mine stock with irons.....

Great one to buy! If I didn't have a shorty that has been through 2 X Barney/Tactical Teacher clinics, and a 22" that arrived yesterday already in route to me I woulda jumped on it too!! Congrats on the purchase, and joining the club!! Now buy a crate of ammo and start enjoying :)
