drawbacks of 1911 concept?

And another shot... yummy!

Hmm, I must respectfully disagree. The luger is one of the ugliest guns ever made. It's the VW Beetle of pistols.

Claven, if you actually own one of those I will now officially die of envy, but before expiring, will name you my handgun hero. (but the aren't as ###y as C-96 mausers)

Oh, and anyone saying the P-08 is ugly?......thats like saying the mona lisa is sorta ok......Just hold one in your hand, ........

I think I'll go fondle mine a bit now...(the luger you perverts)

LOL - I wish that was mine! less than 2000 Borchardts ever made. Most would be official antiques in Canada. Last one I saw sell was like 8K...

They all had a showroom polish and rust blued. The grips were hand-fitted to every gun, finished in hand-rubbed oil and hand-cut checkered. All engraving done by hand. Select walnut was used for the stock, grips, tool, and false-magazine. The boxes were all leather-bound and hand made in Germany.

I should have lied and said I owned one, but alas - it's only a fantasy for me to ever have such a piece :(

To me, the 1911 pistol is SUCH a parallel to the Harley Davidson, in the world of motorcycles...

Those that love them, will always love them, regardless of what newer/fancier/simpler/lighter/stronger/easier/more recyclable/approved by the BC Teachers' Federation pistols are developed.

Those of us that don't like them, will never understand those that do.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and whatever handgun you happen to choose, the most important things are practice, practice, and then some more practice. If you are a good handgun shot, you will probably be darned good whether you are pointing a 1911, or a Tupperware combat doohickey.

I must admit that the older I get, the more laissez faire I become, and I realize that just because I have a firm opinion, it doesn't necessarily give me a right to try to change someone else's... And I must also humbly admit to having tried to do that on several occasions on this very board. From now on, however, I shall do my utmost to try to foster a sense of non-gender-specific brotherly love in the firearms' community (Not as in "Brokeback Rifle Range", fear not... Unless you're into that, and then hey, fly at 'er... or 'im, or.... Oh, never mind - Moving on....).

Just because some of you still feel that a 100 year old pistol design is as good as it gets, well, I say fly your freak flags high! I respect you for your differences, and count you as brethren.... I will happily stand beside you against they that would tell you to put away the old ACP...

That way, when your pistol stops, I can provide cover with my Sig as you try to tear yours apart and figure out what broke "this time"(!!)

;)

All in good jest....

Some people like 1911s, and some just don't!

I just got my first 1911, a Nork Commander and am starting to like it in the same way that I like shooting My Enfield Mk VI .455. It is a piece of history.

Shooting isn't about the newest design. I shoot alot of black powder revolver. Doesn that make me a freak? Hell, it's only the range, not duty in Iraq ;)

If you asked most people out around us, all of us in here are freaks!:D

It's good to be a freak!:)

I like the harley comparo, except my springfield dosen't leave an dirty oil puddle in my lockup when I park it. Nor do I have to tear it down for a complete rebuild once a year.

Everyone says that there are better designs out there now because the 1911 is 100 years old and whatnot. Well how exactly are the newer guns better? The 1911 is accurate, reliable, and extremly customizable. A decent 1911 will last just as long as any HK or Glock out there. How about ammo options? Can you shoot lead from an HK or glock for too long? Or reloads from a glock? Ive heard lots of horror stories about that on here. The 1911 is solid and looks good, and it can take pretty much anything you throw at it.

Reliable is a relative term. Have you tried shooting your 1911 with sand in the action and no lube? I don't think you'd get very far if you tried that. Modern guns like HK and Glock can handle adverse conditions much better. The 1911 is also expensive to manufacture and more difficult to field strip than modern guns. And the hi-power style lockup has proven to be a better design than the 1911's swinging link (which explains why it was copied by pretty much everyone else).

Don’t get me wrong, the 1911 is a great gun for target shooting and maybe even personal defense, but there are better military/police guns out there.

Since when is the 1911 finicky about sand, dirt and mud? If anything, that was its biggest strength back in the day.

You're thinking about a loose-ish GI spec 1911.

Add mud and sand to a Kimber and watch it self destruct ;) Tolerances are too tight to manage crud well.

I think it's like my friends talking about merrit of M-305/M14. Some of them love it to death, can't say enough good thing about it, and others won't touch it with 10 foot pole, can't understand why a person would want one.

Who cares? If we were so sensitive about what others think, then pubilc opinions would make us relinquish our PAL awful quick!

the only thing I can't imagine is someone thinking a Luger is UGLY?! Holy cow, it must be about the most gracefull handgun ever built. Maybe you can get therapy for that problem. Try shooting one.....they get addictive.:D
