I'm very new to the Drayton Valley area. Just moved from Newfoundland. I don't know where to begin finding a place to hunt gophers. Does anyone know how to get started (other than getting a WIN card etc, etc. I have all that).

Don't need a WIN card for gophers. Go to Dudley's there in Drayton and ask if there is anywhere around there that has gophers. There are lots of places around Stoney Plain , Spruce Grove, Edmonton that have lots of gophers though.

I didn't find the Dudley's people very helpful or knowledgeable. I couldn't really tell if they didn't know or didn't want to tell me. From what I hear you need an in with a farmer. I'm going to hang around UFA on Monday and see if I can bug anyone into letting me shoot...

Well that sucks. I'll ask the guys in the Drayton office if they could help you out. All I know for sure is that once you cross the Pembina going west, there's no gophers to be found.

Get an RM map, then go looking around at pasture fields. When you find gophers make a note of it on your RM map on the 1/4 you found them on. The landowners name will be on that 1/4 on the map along with the section number. Find the owner and tell him the section # you are interested in cleaning up the gopher problem. Its that simple. I usually carry a phone book and just call. I get 99% yes

I think you might need to be looking a little east and south of Drayton Valley. There is a gunshot I believe in Warburg. Roy will probably point you in the right direction then drive around and ask permission. Farmers are usually more than happy to let you shoot unless you impress them as a guy who might be a little to Rambo. They want gophers killed but no holes in machinery , buildings , livestock or old cars that they have sitting in the corner of the pasture.

Good luck and good shooting

Gophers in the Drayton area are commonly called "squirrels" ,the tree variety...The ground squirrel variety is the ones your after and will be more prevalent from Hi 22 east.

UFA is a good idea, also put a notice up in the Provincial Agricultural building, I think farmers with gopher problems and wanting the "good stuff" gopher poison need to go there for a permit to acquire the stuff.

A farmer whose property I shoot them on tells me poisoning them is no longer legal in AB the past 5 years or so? He said thats why his pasture is so full of them now. He said "I can't poison and I dont have time to get out there with the 22 to keep them in check". Thats where I come in! LOL

Never thought of Drayton Valley area as gopher country. Most of that area seems to have a high water table, not excactly their cup of tea and I think the reason they are not common further north.

Yes, I have lived in the DV area for all my life. No gophers in the direct area. Spruce grove or the rimbey area has some running around though.

Closer to the drumheller area there is tons of them!

Yeah, I've been in DV for 15 years and have never seen a gopher. Rimbey is a good place to look though further east has more of a problem with them from what I know
