I'm heading out to WMU337 this weekend, with a tag for antlerless mule.

It'll be sight unseen (I've never been there), but I've contacted a couple of ranchers and they've got no issue with me strolling around the leases they hold. It's more land than I can hope to cover.

I'm told there's about 6" of snow on the ground, so it shouldn't be too much of a slog.

Other than "Dress warm.", anyone out there have any suggestions?

What part of the zone are you heading into? I haven't spotted any mule deer in the east central part of the zone, but if you hit the right land you won't have any issues. Shoot me a pm if you like.

Get your general Elk too. Low percentage chance you’ll see them but I saw a large herd last year in 334 (beside 337 one the south west side).

No tips for where to avoid as I haven’t hunted that WMU but with satellite maps you might be able to come up with a general plan. Also, maybe get back in touch with the people you talked to about hunting on their land and ask if they’ve given anyone else permission.

I got one!

I used my favourite load of a 37 million grain steel and plastic bullet propelled by 80l of regular unleaded.

Then I tagged her and hacked her up at the side of the road, amateurishly and alone, finishing just after 2AM.

What a gong show.

Still, it was a great trip. It’s beautiful out here.

I bashfully admit that I had to swear loudly and mash the brakes at exactly the right time in order to hit her 1/2 second later.

Even so, her 4 friends got away.

After seeing the damage it did, I’ll be looking both ways more carefully before stepping onto the road myself. Grim.

You smoked with your truck and took her home?!?? Lol

And it turns out that "Motor Vehicle" is not one of the options on the online Harvest Report pick list.

After a series of unproductive calls to various provincial authorities, I ended up listing "Rifle" as the murder weapon. It was the least-incorrect choice, as the Enfield at least represented 8 of the 6000 or so lbs GCVW.

Interestingly enough, Licensing call center was certain that "Run 'er over, buy the tag, take 'er home." was forbidden, as was Conservation call center. Conservation Officer consulted was equally sure that it was legit.

In hindsight it may have been that the office folks I spoke to first suspected that I had deliberately run her over to save myself time and expense. Once the question got to someone in the field who had been in that scenario (and knew that it doesn't work that way) they straightened it out.

Consider yourself lucky it wasn't a moose. Friend of our died that way, not far from Drayton.

Grizz
