I have recently been restocking a no.4 rifle, and on the lower fore stock that i recieved from numrich had large screw in it. This screw is just ahead of the action about were the reciever ring is. Why is is called the dreaded ishampore screw and can this cause wrapping or anything like that? The stock does appear to be a bit warpped and is contacting the barrel on the right had side making it shoot to the left by about 5 inchs at 100 yards and nearly 8 inchs high, is this some how the result of the screw? If so what is the solution?

Thanks

jerry

Screw was an Indian idea, popular belief among collectors is that it was introduced to re-enforced the stock when rifle grenades were used on the rifles. Many collector's dislike them naturally, hence the term "dreaded Ishapore Screw" name.

I'd guess the warped stock pushing on the barrel is an issue of its own, the screw shouldn't cause that. But if you are going to all of the trouble of restocking, it would have been nice to get one that didnt have it.

I have a couple of Ishies that are my favourites really, so the "dreaded" aspect is in the eye of the beholder. To me it is part of the pedigree. But I wouldn't care for it so much on a No. 4 as they were not made there to my knowledge.

I have an Ishy refurb No4 MkI/2 T, with a No32 MkI scope. The only numbers that match are on the forestock, receiver and bolt. These rifles and scopes were sold as components and reasembled. It has a number of Indian embellishments, such as the Ishy screw and the enhanced butt tips to name a few. It is as accurate as any other No4 T that I've used and the scope is clear with very little paralax and smooth as butter adjustments. If that stock is warped, it's from another reason than the screw. bearhunter

I am kind of partial to Ishapore rifles:)
