The topic has probably floated around a couple of times, because this gun isn't exactly "new" (although it's still current production and issue). But it came up again as an aside in the "Picture of the Day" thread in the Milsurps forum.

The gun itself:

And the current iteration has dumped the built in optic/carry handle for a more modern forend and full length pic rail:

And it got me to thinking...

Exactly what would it take to have an NR, semi-auto only version in Canada? Either imported or locally license made?

I'm just fascinated by the design. There are a lot of very intelligent aspects to it, in terms of ergonomics and ease of maintenance/takedown. To be frank, the design intrigues me more than the other Bullpups on the Canadian market.

Anyone have any thoughts? Ideas? Has this gun gotten a serious look-over by anyone here?

I'm pretty sure that would be classed as a "variant" of a Styer Aug and thus Prohibited.
If it was brought in as NR then it would be another nice bullpup option.

The SAR21 has nothing to do with AUG. If you have ever seen what it is inside ( or do a google search )you will not even come to the conclusion. Different gas system, different bolt system, different receiver architecture. Not even remotely coming close to an AUG other than it is a bullpup.

The only problem is that the Singaporean government does't like to make arm sales to civilian. A US company tried 15 years ago and it went nowhere.

The plastic of SAR21 will not pass cold weather test, and STK knows it. They also tend to have petty sharp recoil and jump right. They are fine compared to Malay AUG and Indonesian Pindad FNC clone, but guess what Singaporian spec ops have - HK 416.

wait, the lab only classify rifles based on their looks, correct ? I don't see how this is an Aug var but it is only my two cents.

Agreed - but we live in a country where the SVD Dragunov is legally an AK variant, and the GSG5 is an MP5 variant.
