This year I have my first moose tag but it is a cow tag for wmu55a and I am lost!! I grew up in the area and know it well but have no idea how to go about calling a cow in or if it is even possible. Everything I have read says stay close to water but I usually see the cows moving up and down the hills in the morning and evening no where near water... I have been spending my weekends scouting out the areas clost to my place and have a half a$$ plan but any pointers you guys have would be greatly appreciated!

The rut will be over by the time the season opens, so there's little point in trying to call even the bulls, let alone the cows. I don't know of any effective way of calling cows, or anybody that does it.

Hunt them the same way you would hunt deer. Find a travel corridor, preferably with a funnel or choke point, plant yourself and let the moose come to you.

There are two aspects to moose hunting: 1. Shooting a moose. 2. Dealing with a moose after you shoot it.

Be sure you are ready for #2 before you do #1. My most frequent moose hunting partner once said, as we stood looking at a dead moose in a rather bad spot, "Nothing ruins a moose hunt quite as much as actually shooting one."

I have never seen a deliberate attempt to call a cow that was successful. You will have to go and find them.

That entirely BS. We ALWAYS have action with bulls calling during the moose hunt in central ON. Last fall I called in three bulls in WMU49.

As for finding cows, I'd focus on hardwood ridges that have quick escapes to swampy areas. I wouldnt worry so much about calling. If you can find a parner to moose hunt with you try some small pushes through the swamp with one guy sitting at the most likely exit point. Another + to having help is then you can take the calf too with his license.

The rut has already peaked here... the bulls have been chasing cows for a couple of weeks now, and the season doesn't open till week after next. I've tried calling to bulls this time of year ( thanksgiving weekend), and they've lifted their heads to look, then went back to sleep.

If the rut is over, success will be tied to how much ground you can cover, and finding well traveled routes between food and shelter.

Another option can be to wait until snow flies and track them. Also helps if you have some hunting partners so you can set up drives to push them out of the thick stuff.

Find where they are feeding and you'll find the cows but you'll need to cover quite a bit of land, don't bother trying to call them . It is possible to call in bulls even after the prime of the rut , the young horny bull that didn't score will still answer.

Good luck with your hunt

Cant wait to leave i am going for a week in wmu 38

Thanks or the help guys, I will let you know if I have had any luck! I know of a few places they frequent now and trails the use to get for food to bed but I'm worried that will change this week as it Is bow seasons in 55a now. Guess I have a lot of walking to do. Again thanks for the help!!
