Drift Pins; the bain of my existence

Are you sure you can re-assemble this once you finally get it apart? There seems to be a lack of knowledge on many levels, a lack of appropriate tools (what you want to do can be done with an air chisel and a punch, but should it?), and, perhaps, a lack of patience.

Go to Canadian Tire, get a starter punch of the appropriate diameter (a starter punch is a drift that has a long taper ending in a flat, squared off diameter it is stronger than any pin punch when starting stiff pins), properly support your work and use a good penetrating oil (the ATF/acetone works well), allowing it to soak in and work overnight, then drive out the pin with a couple of sharps taps. Once the pin starts moving, STOP using the starter drift and switch to the proper pin punch.

no one uses starter drifts anymore, just rather bust up a good pin punch hammering on it til it breaks. But, no one uses correct taps to thread things either...or easy outs properly... Too much hurry today!

Yep! Got a book with the strip guide for my shotgun in it.

Knowledge comes from experience, which I get from trial and error.

Not sure what an Air Chisel is, do i really want another expensive tool? Not really. I'm sure it's all kinds of useful, but I am going cheap/second hand and minimal as much as possible.

Patience? Been doing this over a span of several days for one tiny pin...sounds patient to me.

When I checked online, and went and bought a steel punch, I did not see any starter punch.

Anyway; GOT IT DONE!


Here was the issue; The picture showed the left hand side of the receiver with a drift pointing to the pin on the LEFT-HAND SIDE OF THE RECEIVER. The instructions said; "Drift out pin towards the left" which I was reading as FROM THE LEFT, which made sense combined with the picture; so I figured; *typo*. I tried it the other way right off the bat, pre-better-than WD40 penetrating oil, with just some WD40 soaked in for 3 hours and it did not budge, so I figured my read was correct.

I tried again according to the text, not the pic and WITH the better than WD40 penetrating oil and it basically came right out and stripped down easily from there.

A little cleaning; a single screw tightened and it works like a dream. Fresh lube, re-assemble and strangely, it even sounds a little different now.

Worse for wear; some gouging around the left-hand terminus of the drift pin and LESSON LEARNED.
