Hi all,

Is there any company or gunsmith in Canada that still offers this service? I’m looking to have a 20” government profile barrel drilled and tapped to accept an A2-style front sight base for an MRA Renegade build.

I’ve already reached out to TacOrd but they’ve declined. Any other candidates?

Cheers.

FSB's are not drilled and tapped; they are drilled and pinned. You may want to explore getting a clamp-on base instead.
My apologies - my wording was not entirely clear. The barrel requires drilling and tapping to accept the two taper pins that hold the front sight base on, no?

In any case, I’m already in possession of the parts, so I’d prefer to not have to go out and buy another front sight base unless it becomes completely unavoidable.

Do you have a free float barrel nut and hand guard, and just want to use the A2-style front sight you have, or do you also want to use a handguard cap behind the sight for attaching a more traditional hand guard? If you have a free float, it might be cheaper to just get a Picatinny front sight rather than shipping and labour to drill for the taper pins to attach an A2-style front sight.

I am not looking for alternatives. I am looking for recommendations for a gunsmith to drill the two holes that I need to mount the FSB. I already possess the barrel, the FSB, the pins, A2-style barrel nut with delta ring assembly, triangle front cap, etc. I don’t care what it costs or how far I have to ship it. If I wanted to order another front sight base, I would simply do that and not waste my time coming here. Thanks.

Have you contacted MRA/Victory Ridge themselves? I believe they can offer this service for a custom Renegade build..

Does your barrel have properly machined surfaces of the correct diameter at the gas block location? what about a gas port?
You are looking for drilled and reamed.

Yes. It’s a 20” government profile AR barrel, with a gas block journal width of .750”. The FSB has matching specifications.

There isn't really a great way to block off the gas port in the fsb so this is likely why you got declined.
Sure, but I’m not asking anyone to do that. I’ll deal with the gas port. There are lots of pictures online of Renegades set up with A2 front sights, so it’s hardly impossible.

Maple ridge just told me to install a piece of gas tube and crimp it. Or find something solid to stick in and drill a hole for the pin. When I inquired using a AR barrel on a Renegade.

Then there is drilling, rapping and JB weld a set screw. Blocking the port isnt an issue.

You see any threaded parts in the stuff you have? No threads means no tapping. 🤷‍♂️

The biggest problem is securing the front sight straight in relation to the action.

The second biggest problem will be drilling into the rounded edge of the FSB in the correct spot.

IIRC those holes are tapered and so will require special reamers to create that.

Good luck finding someone to do that work and do it properly.
