Drilled and Tapped Receiver?

Hey all.

I currently own a Winchester SXP Defender shotgun. The receiver is drilled and tapped. My question is, Id like to add an optic to this gun and I am wondering if all picitiny type rails (of the correct length needed) are treated the same? By that I mean the the distance between the screw holes? Or do I need to by a rail made specifically for the shotgun?

If they are factory drilled holes you will be able to look up what rail will fit. If they were drilled & tapped by a gunsmith you will have to measure the holes and then match up a rail that fits, as you have no idea what rail someone used at the time.

Is this a brand new gun ??
 
Hi guys thanks for the responses. Yes, its a new gun. It came with the receiver already drilled and tapped. I see lots of rails for sale but none with the dimensions for the distance between mounting holes. Its all very confusing for me.

This is because rather than buying whatever mount you can find with the right spacing, you should be looking for a mount that's made for your gun (ie the packaging doesn't have to list dimensions if it says "for winchester sxp" on the packaging.)
