Drilling an M305 receiver

If its a Norc be very careful as there have been several experiences of finding something in the steel ( small bits of slag or rocks) that really make drilling precise holes very interesting. This is the main reason I no longer work on Norincos, the cost of carbide bits is high and the time to repair a fubar is considerable

Having drilled a couple of real m-14's long ago, I would not recomend trying to drill Norinco's or real m-14's. The surface hardness of a real m-14 is around 60 RC if I remember correctly, and the core hardness is over 40. From what I have seen of m-305's, they are very close to milspec hardness. The carbide bits I used on the real m-14's were rated for 50 RC max, and yes they did burn up. Tapping was even worse, much worse!

Can the M305 receiver be drilled to accept a pic rail for scope mounting? Yeh? Nay? Foolish question?
There are several very good bolt on mounts available, ARMS18, Smith Enterprise, etc....
