i have a cheap cooey 39 that i want to use sort of as a project gun so if i ruin it, im not ruining an expensive piece. This brings my question does anyone know where i can purchase a scope mount that is meant to be installed by drilling and tapping the receiver?

next, how would one guarantee the mount is centered and square?

thanks

Eric

Check Weaver - they have a website. No guarantees unless you have a gunsmiths jig - several hundred bucks. Your chances of doing it successfully without are pretty close to zero. You'd be better off epoxying the mount, if you want to go DIY.

Hi,
Western Gun Parts in Edmonton has weawer universal mountings that fits them. It is one piece rail ($15 month ago), you can mount it as a one piece but slot has to be milled out for easy loading or you can cut the rail and use two pieces. If you have some mechanical skills end drill press it is no big deal.

I'm going to try one of the Brownell one piece bases on a Cooey 75. Centre punch the holes scribed on a line, measure twice, drill once and use a drill press. I believe I have a decent chance it will be centred and straight. I've done it before.

You could drill and tap one hole first, making sure its centred, then use the base itself held down by one screw and some CA glue as a pilot to make a small indent with a larger bit, then drill it with the proper bit for the tap.

If you want to use a cantilever style mount, use the Weaver 60A which is designed for the Browning semi auto (barrel mounted). I use Lepages Steel epoxy to mount it, then use a drill press with a sleeved bit I made up to drill the 3 holes on the barrel. I use the rear sight slot as a mount for a piece of square steel stock with a level on it and ensure the base epoxy cures to the same level. After you drill and tap, a gentle tap with a brass punch knocks the epoxy loose allowing you to use the screws provided with the mount, or add some Brownells Acraglas as well to make it super-secure. You will have to have the weaver-style ring screw heads approach from the left side of the receiver to give you a little more clearance for the bolt access. Everyone has a way of doing things, I hope mine gives you another option. The bases run about $7-$12 depending upon where you find them.
