I have a pre 1964 Winchester 94 in 30-30. I would like to mount a small red dot between the receiver front and rear sight dovetail slot. to do this I have a short slotted base. My question is " Can I drill and tap the front top of the receiver ring with one small 6/48 hole to hold the rear part of the base to the receiver" Will this cause problems with pressure or future cracks in the receiver ring. I know that XS Sights make a mount for the 94 but I think it is for the angle eject. would like some info before going to the gunsmith. Thanks Bob

Having a hole drilled and tapped in the receiver will not hurt a thing. It is your rifle do do with as you see fit. Although if it was some minty pre 64 model I would have second thoughts

You could rightly be turning a $600 gem into a $200 dollar turd by adding that one small hole. I would advise against it, unless the rifle is in fair to poor condition or has otherwise had other modifications done to it.
Well from the sounds of the replies Im a bad boy for thinking of drilling a pre 64. I have had this for a long time and it works great without any of the crappy 94 problems and it is made of all quality steel. The reason for the red dot is the eyes don't work the way they use to and I only hunt bush with the longest shot maybe 50- 75yds. I guess I will find an angle eject that is already drilled and give that a try. Thanks to everybody for your replies. Bob

"...the eyes don't work the way they use to..." The total loss of collector value aside, a red dot won't help that. Biggest problem is the size of the dot though. A 2 or 3 MOA dot will completely cover the black of a standard sighting in target at 100 yards. A low magnification scope (4X or less) will help you to see the target though.
Hunting out to 150 yards with a red dot is fine.
Even hitting the targets that sunray can't see behind his dot is doable with a bit of imagination.
The only issue some have with red dots is blurriness due to astigmatism but this can also be ignored by the strong of mind.....
