Drinking at hunt camp

Threads like this reinforce why I enjoy hunting alone more and more. No alcoholics, no babysitters, no self-appointed hunt captains, just me, my outdoor skills and my patience. When I do hunt with others, it is usually family, very good friends or both as I won't risk a long awaited hunt to some wildcard strangers or acquaintances. Hunt camp drinking goes back forever and guys like to cut loose when they are away from their family/work stresses. Nothing wrong with that, so long as they don't risk themselves or others. That said, a camp is a shared environment, often close quarters and can easily become the most uncomfortable place in the world if someone has behaved like an a$$hole and/or made regrettable decisions while hammered. Most camps have a core of hunters who've known each other for a long time and for the most part make things work successfully, with a revolving door for the fools, lushes, lazy hunters, crazy people and losers that come and go.

If you're uncomfortable around people drinking in general or you don't like loud, dirty, smelly close environments or you'd just rather curl up with a book in the evening or drink fine scotch and pontificate, a hunt camp is probably not the place for you. If a member of your group can't handle their booze or becomes very irresponsible while drinking its up to everyone else to take his keys, guns and anything else he might hurt himself or others with.

Hmmmmmmm?

When you Google 'Hunter mistook for deer.......' and get entries for the target like hiker, jogger, dog, friend, horse, cow etc now you know why AND how these things can happen.

Lol...... at 6' 210 pounds a shot of baileys in my coffee at 5 am followed by a hearty plate of bacon and eggs certainly isn't going leave me impaired when I head out to dog deer at 7........

Perhaps and hopefully so but this is heard every day at the roadside and in our court rooms nevertheless.

As long as people down range are aware and ok with it good luck and really hope nobody gets hurt so you have to prove it.

Stay at home friend, outside is a very scary place...

I had to endure a tale of woe from a relative.
He and his friend went hunting and each had a case of whiskey.
Once they had filled their tags there was still some whiskey left.
On the way home the friend was charged with Impaired Driving "but that cop really didn't know what he was doing because he wasn't drunk".

And the puritans would be proud! Not of me though :p

This is quite entertaining, keep it up! Ohh and don't forget that in German factories they serve beer with lunch. Oh noes! Think of the children!

Only need to stay under cover long enough for the irresponsible idiots to pick each other off. Can't wait! ;)

Your that ####ed up after a cup of coffee and baileys? You sound like a 13 year old girl, sober people shoot at obscured movement too.

A bit early but you sound like you've already had a few or desperately need some but then again you sound a bit underage.

BTW this is probably not the forum to meet 13 year old girls. Sorry to disappoint. :)

The only actual "Rule" we have at camp is that in the event a moose (deer etc) is downed, the tenderloins are removed immediately and cooked on the camp fire that night.

Who gives a sh*t if guys want to get hammered at camp, it's part of the trip telling stories at night around the fire. Maybe bring the wives on the trip next time if you like nagging so much!

Hunt camps need to remain one of the last few politically incorrect places us men have. Between wives, schools, jobs, kids, friends etc we are inundated with rules, laws, agreements, boundaries and "new" ways to improve ourselves. At the hunt camp, I'm gonna do what I want, say what I want and as long as I'm not hurting myself or others or interfering with the hunt, anyone looking to correct my behaviour can bag sh*t!

To all the "sister-wives" looking to establish rules or tell us how irresponsible we are, or how we're going to end up in jail or in court just stay home and take your wife to Ikea, grab some more comfortable toilet seats for your sit-down pees.

Ugh! Honestly, its amazing some of you get through the day, what with all the rule breaking and un-safe life conditions out there :(

Nobody so far as long as everybody is into that part of it. The important part is the no drinky drinky when shooty shooty or whatever is within group norms.

Looks like three basic ideas

1) Drink as much as you like at times when impairment will not kill and/or injury anybody and go with groups that enjoy the same experience and alcohol consumption.
2) Go with groups where if people drink while driving and or handing firearms that everybody is ok with any results and consequences of the allowed behavour.
3) Don't mess up when I am down range or on the road. ;)
