Drive how far?

As we all know, not everyone has access to a long range facility in our backyards. Others are unsure or have a distaste for CF ranges. For others distance to travel and time are a factor that keep people away. So the question is...How far are you willing to drive to have regular use of a private long range facility?

If access was limited to one day mid week and every weekend, would you join if is was a 2-3 hour drive each way? What would you be willing to pay for a membership in such a range?
 
For me, I joined EESA, mostly for the 300M range. It is a 2-3 hr drive, which I do a couple of times a month.

If your working on something in your "backyard" that would be accessible "one day mid week and every weekend" I'm interested... would be a lot shorter drive!
 
I drove 10 hrs one way to a shoot in Kamloops last year and on two previous occasions to the BCRA Tactical Rifle Championship in Chilliwack from Edmonton. I will be making to the trip to Homestead a few times this year as well as back to Chilliwack, so to answer your question, absolutely. I have met tons of nice people and you definitely learn a lot and improve immensely when you compete against people who are better than you are.
 
I'd be willing to drive 2-3 hours one way on weekends or a weekday if I had the whole day. Even a bit longer if the range was really nice. That gives me Connaught, Borden and Petawawa (if the public is welcome). My last job gave me a skewed perspective on distance. A 3 hour drive to me is just around the corner, 12-15, now your talking long. I'd like to shoot at Milcun, but I'm not sure if it is a place where I could join and shoot regularly or if it's just a training facility. Perhaps I should send Keith an e-mail and ask. As for the money, well this better be a better year for local construction or shooting is the least of my worries. If it wasn't for all the powder, projectiles, and primers I had squirrled away I wouldn't be shooting now. The way things have been the last year $250 is about the best I could do.
 
It depends how long the range is. If it is over 1000 yards then yes it would be worth the drive. I would like something 1500 +
 
Well, seeing how i live in western canada where crown land is plentiful...

I wouldn't drive more than 30 minutes to shoot at a range. Even that is pushing it. My range is 10 minutes away. I've been there twice in the last year, and have yet to pull a trigger while there. Once was to buy my first membership, second time was to renew that membership.

I'm primarily a non-restricted shooter, black and wood, so i prefer to shoot outside the confines of a range. That said, i'm buying a pistol and plan to get involved in the local defensive pistol club. Still, i couldn't see mysefl driving more than 30 minutes for that either.

Well excuse me mister roll over and scratch his nuts while sleeping in! Not too mention the greek oven under the blankets your poor girlfriend must endureLaugh2 Wakes up from his princess sleep takes a prolonged morning dump while in no particular rush slowly getting ready for the princesses big drive to the range.:D:D What 1 min drive in bad conditions;)

DG, I think it's more like 2 min. That's if I have to walk and not take the atv :D
 
I feel for you guys, I take our available Crown land for granted. It takes me one hour to get to my gongs and I could stretch it out to 1500, well not me personally but...:rolleyes:

If I couldn't shoot on Crown land, I'd pay to play. I paid $1000/year to golf on a s**tty municipal course, so I'd probably relate it to that if I had to. The $ part not the s**tty course part.

As far as the drive, when I searched for my spot it had to be within 2 hours of home.

My opinions are not relative because again, I drive one hour to shoot free. And I don't have to pay either. ;)
 
Takes me five minutes to get to my 1100m stretch of land. I can't imagine driving hours to shoot long range. I'd rather change my shooting discipline.
 
I guess we who own land or pasture close to the yard have it pretty nice. I wonder if i could hang a steel target over the side of a cow and have a moving target? Opps i guess we BBQ tonight.:D My 100 yd. range is 20 yards behind the house, keeps vistors in the house on there toes when i`m working up loads.

Like I said, not everyone has somewhere to shoot long range in their back yard. You are very lucky.

I could find a place to shoot 1000 yards around here, but I don't need the local police executing a high risk takedown on my firing position. It wouldn't go very well for them:rolleyes:

I can shoot 300m at a range 15 minutes from my door. However if I want to practice long range shooting on a range or compete, I have to travel 4+ hours each way.

Maynard I will have a place to get about 1000m - 1200m in our neck of the woods it will have a private hardwood forest as a buffer with steel to shoot I will be ranging it shortly. There will be a small yearly donation to the land owner.

I'm sure for most the donation wouldn't be a problem it's the range that matters. I however am not too willing to donate to a short range club

I drive 5.5 hours to shoot 1700 yards! We can shoot 2000+ if we get off our asses and do some hiking to set up our targets:D I would say this is pretty decent for Ontario:cool:

true, but in 5 1/2 hrs you'll be in Northern Ontario, and I can definitely agree that there is still some crown land left, that can be used to shoot far :ar15:
