Was in LGS yesterday and lo and behold I see a couple of green crates - contents Russian SKSs. Started thinking to myslef with all of fthe recent BS about re-calssification, maybe I NEED to buy another gun. After checking out a few found a nice 54 with what looks like a chrome lined barrel and laminate stock. Think it's a re-furb as it had a few scratches on the stock and other marks. OK, so I says to myself, "self, you need to buy one" and I did.

Got it home and gave it a good hot bath with soap to get all the nasty cosmoline off, then some isopropyl alchohol to get whatever was left. Then gave it a good clean / lube and G96'd it throughout, and after a little quality time fondling it, put it to bed. Planned to go to shoot it Sunday morning.

So this morning (Sunday) it was -12, but I really wanted to go shoot this new toy. Off to the range we went. I was quite surprised at how nice it shoots. Had about 100 rounds of non-corrosive and was surprised at how little recoil it had, and even with Iron sights I was hitting the paper pretty well.

On the way home I stopped at same LGS as I remembered they had the Tapco stocks, and picked one of those up (Blade version) along with 3 tapco mags. Went with tan as I thought, why not something different, I'm getting bored of black for everything... Then I spied the Wartak rail kit and it magically jumped into my hands saying "take me home".

Just finished putting it all together and I'm really diggin it. Stock went on real easy (just like all the YT vids). Had troubles getting the pin out of the gas tube, but will work on tht some more later. Wartak Rail went on easy enough once I found the right sized punch for the rear sight pin. Mounted an old Bushnell 3-9 scope on it and now I really want to head out to shoot it. Might even pick up another SKS just for the heck of it....

The SKS is a lot of fun to shoot, and very reliable in any weather. The piston driven action has just lately been appearing in more and more ARs, and only in more expensive higher end models...it keeps the SKS shooting cooler and cleaner. As long as you don't expect tight groups at 100 yards you'll be happy with the SKS...it was designed as a reliable military rifle and not for long range hunting or target shooting.

Yeah I wasn't surprised by how awesome it was cause i did a ton of reading before my first. But I still smile every time I touch one off and send it down range

Sounds like you're off to a fine start! I bought myself a Murray's firing pin, did a trigger job and put her in an ATI stock. Still deciding on a rail and scope. Btw, where's this LGS? Sounds like a place I need to visit!

I was gonna get around to that soon...

Here's one - still have the wood upper on it as the dam pin just won't come out:

And a little closer showing the Wartak rail / scope mount:

That rail fits pretty well. don't think it'll have any issues keeping zero as the pin in the rear is pretty tight to get in/out.

Hmm, I picked up 3 and they all have that rivet. Package has a "5 round" sticker covering the "20 rounds" printed on the bag.
Damn. I hope Tapco isn't producing them like that now. I own 3 and have seen and handled close to a hundred of them since last July and have NEVER seen that eyesore of a rivet before.

Oh, and if you want further ideas for your tan Tapco I can post pics of mine which I've done a number of mods to. None of which include an aftermarket rail or scope ;)

Post up any pics - I'm liking the tan as something other than Henry Ford black.

BTW, liked it so much I went and picked up another 1954 today. Why have one when you can have 2 for <200 bucks a piece.

They also had an H&K SL8 in the shop and I'm definitely gonna go back and check that ut a little more.
