Dropping powder from a dispenser

How close is close enough? I'm using a rcbs uniflow using extruded imr 4064. Rcbs web site says to expect +- .3 to .5 I'm seeing bigger differences from the little bit I have used it. I have it set to 43gr. I drop it and weight the case with powder. Tare the case. Most of the time I'm dumping it back in. Are you using a trickler as well?

I had same issue when first throwing powder. I don’t use 4064 but do use a lot of other powder that was driving me crazy. Some powder threw better with a baffle some without. What I did was practised throwing the powder I was giving me issues with a baffle and without. Biggest thing was trying different throws and doing it the same.

I weigh three or four thrown charges , to set the measure, then I throw them , simple as that .
The weight of the case is not a factor.
The strings I posted in post 11above are typical inside 600 meters.

I'll be using H335 next. Probably be smoother. With the 4064 I'll have to add a couple steps looks like

If you are using ball powders, no issue with nearly any powder thrower, for stick powders, the longer they are the worse they are to throw. I threw ball powders for my Schuetzen rifle on the bench, into the case, at the range, all the tests I did with it with it held .1gr, shot around 35k rounds that way. I still use it with AA1680 and 2230 for my 218Bee and 223Rem these days, it's faster than setting up a Chargemaster or Autotrickler, which I also have now. I used a Lyman 55 and a Redding BR3, still have and use the BR3. I didn't see any advantage using stick powders in them, just used a beam scale back then, they were more of a PITA than using the thrower was worth to me. Chargemasters were 15 yrs away at the time. Often threatened to buy a Harrel to check it out, see if they really did handle sticks any better, even 15 yrs ago there were a lot of conflicting stories on a Harrel and stick powders. There were a couple of others that proclaimed they handled sticks at the time, they aren't around anymore except maybe at some estate sales.
You can certainly use one and trickle up, I've used the smallest Lee scoop in the scoop kit since near Day 1 for that. I thoroughly dislike the RCBS type tricklers, used the scoops for loading the beam scale for 30 yrs before getting a Chargemaster, and can do it nearly as fast as the Chargemaster, even with ctges like 7RM. May be more worthwhile for you to try out something like Staball Match or 6.5 for what you are doing, bothe can work in your charge range, Match is a closer fit to Varget/IMR4064, see if it acccomplishes what you want it to do.

If I'd known:) Got probably 10lb 4064. No courier service here. I could drive it to a courier depot. But then I'd have to source some powder within driving distance. Probably cost more than I can get for the 4064. Got a Frankfort trickler coming

Old guy Elmer Keith used to have a column in Guns and Ammo magazine - probably where I read this - he was more concerned about having same VOLUME of powder, case to case, then he was about a specific WEIGHT of powder - might have been to do with the powders that he used?? I think he used a powder volume thrower for all his six-gun and rifle loadings. If you followed him, I do not think 0.5 grain made much difference to him.

I get where you are coming from, nearest powder sply to me is 100km plus. Couriers will deliver most things here though, and yet, there is a pile of stuff on Amazon, and others, that will not del to this location. Came to the conclusion it's probably not supposed to make any sense.

How would you suggest checking the ammount of powder in the case?
sounds like you are dispensing direct to the case, which will have some minor variation. Testing the loads is the only way to say if it will be accurate enough for you.
For hunting loads using a loading block to hold 20 to 50 rounds and dumping from the dispenser will get good loads
Smooth action on the handle with no banging, and having a baffle in the powder tube will help
if that sounds crude, consider how many millions of rounds have been loaded with a Lee Dipper for powder

The Harrel has a baffle chamber built into it
There is have absolutely no doubt in my mind that I could throw 4895 for my 308 and .223 loads and shoot clean rounds as well as Varget with my rifles set up in F/TR mode, I have done it.
In fact I did a test a few years back at 800 meters but with a rifle chambered in 6mmBR, throwing 10 charges with the Harrel and weighing 10 with a V2 inteledropper and lab scale.
Cartridges were handed to me ar random and recorded by a person who noted tge score and weather or not the round was weighed or thrown.
It was an interesting experiment with surprising results .

I just looked the test results at 800 meters that I did three years ago with the 6mmBR and Varget.
For those that like numbers, the combined weighed and thrown charges of 50 rounds was an SD of 11.1 and an ES of 25.

Not stopping at a jam might help. Might have to work the handle a little harder. Hoper didn't come with a baffle. Only filled it 1/4 so as not to put a lot of weight on. Wonder if more weight might be better for extruded

Im guessing there wasn't much difference between weighed and thrown? What do SD and ES stand for?
standard deviation and extreme spread.
And no, no significant difference.
Here is one of the test targets. The two closest to the bull were initial zeroing shots as I had to move up from 600 meters.
I then moved the sights so we could get a good indication of the group size without the sighters messing it up.
This was shot with sling'n'iron sights BTW and not in calm conditions.
disregard the 900 meter notation BTW, the target was at 800
The squares are 1MOA
