Heres the deal

I go to the range...I am shooting my 1911..I go to put it away after the ammo is gone..ck the chamber,drop the slide.put the trigger lock on.The guy beside me just about has a heartattack.YOU NEVER DROP THE SLIDE..you bend this,bust that bla..bla...bla

What is up with this...how come you cant drop the slide..I have shot LOTS of pistols..I have never heard this before

Will someone enlighten me

There's lots of opinions pro & con on the topic.

Personally, on 1911's, I never drop the slide on an empty chamber.

That's an understatement. Some people feel that it is hard on various bits, some people think the gun is tough and can take it. I am with NAA, I never drop the slide on an empty chamber with any of my pistols. Whether it makes any difference or not, who knows? I do it because I feel like it.

Just as with which bore cleaner, which oil/grease and barrel break in procedures, many people have firm opinions and it becomes a near religous battle.

you never drop the slide on an empty chamber because without the weight of a round to slow it down the bolt drops too fast and hits the barrel a lot harder than it is designed for. will it do damage? this is where all the arguing starts.

Of course you can drop the slide on an empty chamber, all day long if you want. Don't complain when your finely tuned, glass rod breaking 3lb trigger job turns into an 8lb sand pit.

Do it to your crappy guns all you want. Do it to mine, get ##### slapped.

Holding the trigger back only works when manually reciprocating the slide to keep the hammer and sear engagement surfaces apart. This simulates what happens while pulling the trigger under normal circumstances. Won't help when dropping the slide.
 
I think the moral of the story is this, if you want to drop it, go for it! It may or may not hurt it. If it's someone else's gun you might want to ask first.
 
This topic should only be posted on pain of death.... like discussing Bullpup stocks ;)
