Drops of Lead In Magazin?

Hello everybody.

I just picked up a TOZ 17-01 22LR rifle at a gun show. It was in a good shape, looked hardly used, so I was pretty excited. I couldn't get the magazin out though. The guy pulled out a screw driver, and started to fiddle with it. As I didn't want him to scratch it, I said, never mind, it's probably dirt.

I brought it home, removed the bottom plate of the magazin and I peeked inside: it seems like there are drops of lead inside! I pulled a part of the spring, from the magazin, and there is a big gush of lead I suppose. There are even two drops on the outside of the well.

What could that possibly be? Did somebody try to "deactivate" it on purpose? Could it be something that happened during the gun operation? I'm really puzzled...

it isn't something that can occur during the normal operation of the firearm. I'm guessing maybe the magazine spot welds failed and the previous owner tried to solder it back together or the magazine catch may also have been broken and repaired with solder. take the barreled action out of the stock and look for solder around the bottom metal and mag catch. good luck.

Thanks. I'm having a hard time unscrewing the bottom bolt that holds the stock and the action together though.

Maybe 'warm up' the screw with a low-power solder pen ? Could be just 'old grease' or could be loctite. Hope it's not 'worse' stuff.

Yeah, it's not lead. It's JB weld or something like that: it's light and it can't cut with I can't cut with nippers.

Is there some kind of chemical that can remove that? Maybe heating it with a torch?
Torch. JB weld when cured, is chemical and oil resistant. But heat can break it down.

Saw a video on youtube. Yes, the torch would burn it. The problem is that the action appears to be glued to the stock. And the fact that I can't unscrew the bottom screw is an indication of that.

I also read that JB recommends acetone as a means of removal. What would happen if I soaked the whole thing in acetone? Would it damage the metal parts or their finish?

Is butchering the wooden stock the only option now?

Acetone shouldn't damage the bluing, but it would suck all the oil out of the stock, and dry it out, maybe cracking it. Wrap it in a garbage bag and toss it in the freezer.

did you try heating the screw ? Is there any clearance around the magazine well OR action OR receiver where you can 'heat' it ?
AND I googled "JB Weld Solvent" and found that acetone can 'soften' JB, as well as possibly vinegar if it can soak into the wood? - https://mamaneedsaproject.com/how-to-remove-jb-weld/
Seems easy but prob NOT ;)
Well, I did try heating with a small solder gun. Whether it helped or not I don't know, but an impact driver + a hammer + a few four-letter words did do the trick. It seems like there was some kind of thread lock on it.

Anyway, it turns out, it's NOT JB weld. See the pictures below. As somebody mentioned it here before, could it be that the magazin was falling out so they just touch welded it an made into a single shot gun?

I don't like it. Is there any chance to restore it somehow?

Good that you got it apart ! I'd suggest that if the action still works and fires OK, maybe you could find a used mag-well and some mags. Check the EE and maybe put a WTB there ? Otherwise you can put a ForSale ad for the parts ?

You got scammed, sure it’s restorable just replace the bottom metal and magazine.

It’s a parts gun now

Geez, someone has a Toz-17 mag on EE - - for $ 130 ! Maybe you can clean off the JB from the well and make it work ?
