I was looking at getting a Drulov .22 pistol, are they any good? - they seem pretty nice to me single shot and not much to go wrong and all - are they all break action, or are they all solid framed and bolt action? is the breech solid or are they like a flobert pistol? Best regards Tony.

Hiya. I have a model 70 & a model 75 pair of Drulovs. For the money ($100 & $200 respectively) they are an excellent introduction to "Free Pistol" aka ISSF 50m pistol competition. They are solid and very accurate. They are bolt action. They don't have a bolt handle like a typical bolt-action rifle, but instead you twist the back to rotate the bolt lugs out. There are two weak points, depending on the model: The model 70 has "adjustable" sights, but require loosening screws and sliding the rear blade left or right. Not exactly conducive to precision sight adjustment. Elevation is adjusted by turning a screw which raises/lowers the front sight. The model 75 has easily and precisely adjustable by hand sights. I've found the grips to be terrible. Others have found them comfortable. I found them to be as ergonomic as a hunk of 2x4. I ended up molding my own for the model 70, which is quite easy as the grip literally just needs a hole through it for a bolt to run through.

So I was quite happy with mine, frequently doing not much worse than others who were using Free Pistols bought for 10x the price. But I got more serious in competition and eventually bought a TOZ-35.

I guess it really depends on what you want to use a Drulov for. If you are looking for a cheap entry into 50m competition, they're fine. Either buy the 75 and whittle/putty the grip until it fits. Or buy the 70 and spend another $100 or so on some aftermarket rear sight. And whittle/putty the grip. If you're not interested in 50m/Free Pistol shooting and are just looking for a plinker, then enh, I'd say get a used ruger mark 2, or Hi-Standard revolver or something a bit more versatile.

For the money you can't beat them for plinking and they are very accurate is what I have found with the one I have. Not sure which model I have without digging it out to look !!!!!

Drulov PAV

Hello weighty Tony,

There is a Drulov break action as well, called the PAV, and often mis-registered by CFC. I have a couple of these, and they are even simpler than the models 70 / 75, perhaps slightly less accurate, though these are the ones I hit the half inch bullseye with. I couldn't shoot the model 70 I had, but the PAV is about half the weight and often less expensive. The last one I got on the equipment exchange for $140 shipped and in perfect, like new condition.

Sweet little guns. I'll try to put up a picture tomorrow, but next to my Walther .22s these are my favorites.

And I overpaid! You can see them at Tradex for $89!

While looking for the manufacturer's website, I came across this:

Allegedly these are Drulov 97 pistols one of them in .22 Hornet. . . interesting to say the least. .

so far I could not find any more references to them at all. . .

I have a drulov 75 in my personal collection. It is a good little gun. Very accurate for a pistol; and I find it easy to shoot well too. It has the funny button trigger that is very light. It's not a gun I take to the range every time I go, but it is definitely nice to take out once and a while. It is on the list of never-sell.

To Tony: Yeah actually, now that you mention it, the action is pretty similar in operation to a Welrod.

I'm very happy to see a little fan-base out here beyond use in 50m matches. That's good to hear.

To: Brutus. Ammo-wise, pretty much anything will work I'm sure. Typically I use CCI standard velocity because I find the quality/price ratio to be excellent. Occasionally I've used some RWS R50 and Eley Sport when feeling particularly flush. But my skill at being able to release consistent perfect shots at 50m is far, far, FAR worse than the spread of even the cheapest ammo.

These are much nicer looking than the models Tradeex has in stock. Does anyone in Canada carry them?
