Firing pins are cheap and easy to replace in some designs: Remington. Mossbergs, etc. In others, as listed by Sharptail, they are most definitely not. Depending on the design, there may be ways of easing springs without snapping the gun.
If you leave an 870 pumped open the hammer spring is cocked. If you dry fire it will must likely not cause any damage. Fireing pins are cheap to replace until you are on the hunt on a weekend or up north on a 2 week or longer hunt in the middle of nowere than they are very expensive to replace if you can find one. I have only broken one firing pin in a Ithica model 37 on a Saturday hunt in the winter when metal reacts differently. I cut a spent hull down when I misplace my snap cap.
