Dry Fire An AR-15???

dry fired my C7 during training a whole helluva lot (basic). it doesn't matter. it functioned and i'm sure not much has been changed on it since its manufacture in '89 (my rifle was almost as old as me...........)

Use too own one but got bored and sold it.

Being a wpns tech is only good if your in the right unit ;)
True 'nuff. That goes to say for every kind of regiment, though, depending your choice of trade/component/branch.

However at least your trade comes in handy much more in light that you're a gun nut. :D

Dry firing the firearm when assembled is fine (no problem whatsoever). In fact it is a required part of the function tests described in the manuals.

Dry firing the lower half when separated from the upper is a problem. It may not happen the first time, but it usually wont' take long to break your lower receiver (the hammer striking the lower receiver will eventually crack and break it... just a matter of time). It's a very obvious cause (for lower receiver failure) and manufacturers will NOT warranty the lower when it fails this way... it's considered user abuse and does not fall under warranty (at least not from any manufacturer I've ever seen).

You can buy an insert (used by some Gunsmiths/Armourers) that protects the receiver when dry firing with the upper off... but you can also simply hold your hand in between hammer and receiver and stop the hammer from making contact... that works just as well :)

easy snap cap is asembled case without powder or primer. fill the primer hole with rtv silicone. this is how i have my 12 gauge caps done. i use these to check cycling more than anything else.

You could also just simply use a dummy round or empty casing when dry firing, however is unnecessary.

Dry firing isn't a problem as long as the BOLT is in the upper, which is attached to the lower. You can dry fire with the upper on and still damage the lower if the bolt isn't in place. No snap cap needed.
