Greetings folks,

I am rather newish to the shooting sports and have a question.

Is dry firing a rifle safe to do with modern rifles or will I be doing damage to the pin and the internals?

I've googled this question and have found that %50 of people say it is harmful and the other %50 say it is safe to do and encouraged to improve aim and trigger pull.

So whats the scoop?

ps. I have a Remington ModelSeven .308 ...... Just in case..

Thanks Folks

dry firing is good for getting trigger pull good and getting rid of flinch (if you have it). i use a snap cap in all my guns when dryfiring, cheap and better safe than sorry

In the Canadian issue manual that was given to the soldiers with their .303 Brit's, routine dry fireing was part of the feild take down, clean and reass proceedure.

You could purchase a snap-cap, or you could use a spent round complete with spent primer. Either one will reasonably prevent firing pin overtravel and damage.

Buy a good quality snap cap and practice your trigger "pull".
I would not use a spent case with an old primer as the resistance to the pin drop is no longer there after a couple of dry fires.
Just the view from my saddle.
Welcome to the faternity from an old fart to a newcomer.

Never dry fire any rimfire unless you have something like this. Their pretty cheap and last for half a dozen hits.

i wish a company would make snap caps for rimfires. and not snapcaps that only last a few hits, but ones you can use without worrying for a long time. i would definitely buy some.

I was told to take a spent case and remove the primer and fill it with silicone...it supposedly creates a enough resistance to ensure no damage to your firing pin...

I use this method in my new T/C Pro Hunter...so I don't damage the firing pin...the trigger is still too heavy...even with all the practice...

I love the rifle just hate the trigger and hammer...

Hope this helps...

Cheers

It depends on the gun. I used to do the Canadian Forces "test after assembly" thing with my civilian guns without giving it a second thought until the tip of the firing pin of my Rossi Puma broke off. It was a pain to order and install a new one. Now I only dry fire with military pattern rifles or use a snap cap.
