Just saw an add for Burris scopes. Say they're available in front, rear, and dual focal plane designs. What is a dual focal plane? First I've ever heard of it.

I have not heard much about them but Bushnell sells one as well. The way I understand it is that you have a red-dot on the SFP that stays at a consistent size as you zoom in and out. The actual reticle is in the FFP so that it subtends correctly at all magnifications.

I take it this was a 1-6X optic or something similar?

Not sure what it was for. The one in the tv commercial looked like a 3.5-15 NF size of scope.
The way you explained it sounds pretty neat though. I wonder where they are made, and how good they are?

In order to have a magnified and erect (correct) image...all rifle scopes cause the image to be formed at two places...the first image plane and the second image plane. A reticle can be located at either location and typically Europeans picked the first plane while North American Mfr's selected the second plane....i image one could be at both locations but this would give you a headache and make the scope useless...unless there was a way to remove one or the other reticle as/when required. Or I guess in the case of a illuminated dot which might not be too intrusive. Although placing a reticle at both locations means either two sets of W/E adjustments or a complicated means of having one W/E mechanism control both reticles

It just mean the reticule is first focal and its combined with a red dot in second plane which you can switch off when you dont need it.
You get the best of both optic style in one single unit.

This, I have only seen dual focal plane available on scopes with less the 2X magnification on the low end. Let's you keep a big illuminated dot or horseshoe while still allowing you to mil with the ffp reticle. Xtr 2 1.5-8 and uso 1-8 are both examples.
