Duck Calls

Give me an idea of what you guys are using for duck calls. Mostly mallards, woodys and black ducks in my areas. I dont have a problem spending the money on the expensive ones but I wont if I don't have to (zink RnT, etc)
im not the best caller of all time so which ones are easier to control the sound? theyre the ones im interested in.

My best one is a wooden Faulks I bought at MacLeods about 30 yrs ago. I recently tried a couple of new plastic ones (the under $20.00 ones) and neither of them sounds anything like a duck. (make ya a smokin' deal on them, :p )

I looked up faulks, they're still in business. I'm certainly no expert caller or anything so others more knowledgeable may well dissagree, but for wife, I'm buying another faulks for under 20 bucks.
 
A Haydell's DR-85 is a classic and about $20. Used it for a few years before giving it to my Dad to replace his cracked one. Currently on my lanyard I have a Duck Commander Classic Commander and an RNT Original (got on clearance at Bass Pro cheap). Both are great calls and I highly recommend both of them.

Forgot to mention, I also have a 6-in-1 whistle (I believe it's a Duck Commander as well) that I've found really reassures pressured bird or ones that otherwise don't look like they want to land.

The guys mentioned Faulks calls. They aren't that expensive, and can be good calls. I probably have a dozen of them, if my boys didn't add them to their collections.
 
i run a echo timber polycarb and have awesome results with it. you shold have a few different models i recomend getting a loud one and a quiet one, reason being is that the loud one will spook birds on a calm day , while a quiet one might not even be heard by ducks on the lake in a storm.

but as specific models go the echo timber polycarbonate gets my vote
 
My best open field call is an acrylic Big Guys Best (pre-Foiles), my best small water/pothole call is an Bocote RNT Short Barrel. Both are single reeds because I don't need a crutch...
 
I have a bunch of different calls but my favorite is my Riverbottom Calls double reed duck. Nice thick solid hand turned acrylic for only $60. Easy to use, very light to work and amazing sounds. My second favorite for hunting with is my Captain Charley's Fowl Fooler. Amazing sound and easy to work. Believe I paid $29 for it.
 
Before anyone condemns me, I use Foiles timber rattler and straight street. Street is a screaming loud single reed for open field sand the timber rattler is a great finishing call.
 
My old Scotch is single reed. Easy to blow and easy to load up on when a little exited. I like Duck commander's classic but it is a little hard to blow. If you have time seek out some old OLT's, Herter's and Scotch calls. They will be worth the wait.

I have an old Scotch duck call as well. I have taken the bellows off and blow it instead. Today being Father's day, I received a Phat Lady duck call which we will try out this fall. I think that my son bought it for himself but that is
OK:)
 
I've run OLt's, Zinks and Foiles.... still have the old Olts. Try out what whatever brand(s) that you have access to and go from there. High end calls dont make the caller, practice does!
 
You get what you pay for with duck calls. I would assume we are talking about single and/or double reed styles though. Blow a $20 call, then try a $129 call. But as stated, practice is the most important factor. Would I pay 129 bucks for a duck call...not a chance!
 
I have an old single-reed Faulks call that I got at crappy tire about 30 years ago. I do OK with it.

My secret weapon is a generic tin whistle that I bought in DisneyWorld about 20 years back. I pulled the cheap plastic ball out with tweezers and the result is a reasonably loud whistle that has a real wheezy quality very similar to a drake wigeon. DEADLY!

Note that not all whistles will replicate this sound...

Leave the calling to me and the retrieving to my dog. Just watch your sectors and shoot straight.

I for one notice alot of cruddy calls being recommended. Buy 5 or 6 Cambodian tire squakers or one good call that you can treasure and be proud off.

I hate to admit it but a number of good double reeds have come out in the past few years. I even had a Saunders Deuce Coupe a couple years ago, but it somehow ended up on a friends lanyard after a poor shot resulted in knocking down both the drake and the hen behind the drake down...

I would echo Turkeyslayer 1300's advice on buying just 1 quality call as opposed to multiply cheapies. Nothing more frustrating they flaring working birds because the bargain bin call sounds more like a kazoo then a hen mallard.
