i am starting to buy decoys for duck hunting and i was wondering
1- how many decoys are in your setup...
2-if it is possible to have to many decoys...( 100, 200?)
3- is there a shape that you prefer...
4- is there a difference between the setup on land and in water

i hunt on the st-laurence river, so they are floating decoys.

thanks

This is only my second duck season....

Number of decoys... 24 (Malards 12 male / 12 female) Higdon brand. $40/dozen from St-Lawrence Outfitters.

Too many decoys? Probably not... depends on where you use them I guess. But have seen on YouTube a guy with 300 decoys, to expensive for me at this point though.

Shape: All of mine are floating water decoys.

Land/Water: Only used them on water so far. But would guess that you would want some resting and some standing plus maybe a couple that look like they are landing or taking off.

Lastly, there is a ton of info on the net, Ducks Unlimited for example and, YouTube.

Hope this helps. Enjoy the season... only 4 days til pre-season goose... 20 days til duck!

ok ok thanks bluesclues ,but for the shape i was refering to the placement of the decoys in general ( i heard of the L shape).

i will try to find the video with 300 decoys.

Oh, that shape.

The most common that I have seen or heard about are the "J" or the "U" shape.
Google duck decoy patterns and you will see these and many more.
For me, where I hunted last year, I just scattered the decoys over the pond/marsh and it seemed to work fine. As I get experience I will find what works best for me.

Like, I said, Google really is your best friend and ofcourse, if you can get out with some experienced guys, you'll learn their tricks of the trade.

thanks for the info, i guess i will be buying more decoys...
what do you think about the oversized decoys are they worth it because they are like 4 to 5 times the price...
i just bought 3 dozen black ducks for 32,95$/ dozen and the price of one oversize is like 20 to 25 $.

and i was also wondering if i can mixe oversize and normal size( probably not , but i am wondering).

I run Higdon decoys, the foam filled Super Magnum ones. 6 black ducks, 9 female mallards, 9 male mallards. I also run one female baby mojo spinning wing decoy with on/off circuit installed 2 second on, 2 seconds off and one male baby mojo spinning wing decoy with no circuit which runs non-stop.

Usually set up in the U pattern or J pattern with the spinning wing decoys in the leading edge into the wind.

Cheers
Jay

I hunt over anywhere from 3 to aprox 70(I'd use more if I had them) decoys depending on location, hunting pressure and how early in the season it is. J and U shaped paterns seem to work, but you've got to play around for yourself and find out, I always leave an open landing zone and if water levels permit put a mojo decoy landing in it.
Hunting open water for divers I don't think its possible to have too many decoys, I set up on the outside of the hook with wind blowing across me. Above everything else the most important thing to success of your spread is being where the birds want to be when they want to be there.

Decoys

I only use 6 like these, and they work like no other decoy.
