Duck & Goose bands

Live in central alberta have seen 600+ birds hit the ground this year,, not a single band. In 3 years living here Ive seen 15-1800 hit the ground,, 3 bands total.

Buddys kid back in southern ontario has shot 33 honkers this year,, 3 banded. When I lived in ontario I killed about 25 banded birds in 20 years of waterfowling. I lived and hunted very close to the jack miner bird sanctuary though.
 
9 years of waterfowl guiding....over 5000+ birds shot during that time....maybe 10 bands? If you're looking for them, find where they've done the local banding programs (within your province) and set up nearby. That or find a way to target Ross's geese as they're heavily banded.
 
You could always go after them the way Jeff Foiles does; find a park with lots of banded and collared geese, usually through posts left on your message board. Bait the geese close to your truck with pieces of bread, then shoot the banded ones with a pellet gun. Mind you he's in prison on game violations right now.

In 6 years I have taken approximately 550 ducks and geese. Not a single band. Only seen two banded birds taken in that time, maybe 4-5000 birds shot in my presence in total from Lancaster, to Wolfe Island/Kingston, North to Ottawa .
 
So far I have 2 goose bands and 1 duck band this season, both geese were double banded as well. On my lanyard presently there are 16 duck bands and 18 goose bands for 18 seasons for waterfowl hunting and many thousand birds shot. I have shot about 5 neck collared geese over the years also. It seems some areas they are more common than others.

I shot a mallard maybe 40 years ago with a band.Have been waiting for a good time to send it in and say I just shot it. Shot a tagged sheep once I was able to find out how old it was even.

Been waterfowling for 32 years and I have about 20 goose bands and 60 duck bands. I used to figure we would get 1 band for every 50-100 geese we shot but the past two years have changed that number. We have shot 300 Canada's to date this fall and only 1 band. Last year same thing, shot around 285 Canadas and took 1 with a band. I did get a banded Snow this past May in QC though!!:D
 
I've collected (and reported) maybe 5 dozen bands over a 40 year period. Perhaps 8-10
of those were Canadas. A good many were taken at Long Point, Rondeau, Mitchell's Bay and few at Wolfe Island, and several more at or near Tiny Marsh.

Seemingly, quite a few were taken near where banding initiatives were strongly undertaken by either MNR or CWS staffers. One MNR staffer I know banded literally hundreds of birds, mostly Mallards, BWT and Blacks at Tiny Marsh, and another Canadas near Bass Lake ... but I'm fairly certain not much banding occurs at either local these days.

Of note, I shot a Blue-winged Teal in north-central Cuba that was banded near Wadena
Saskatchewan and a really nice drake Canvasback at Long Point that was banded in Maryland that was 12 years old. On the other end of the scale, a banded and colour-collared Canada that was banded 2 years previously at a local less than 2 miles from where I shot him ... and less than 1/2 a mile from my back door ! I've picked "jewelery" off Mallards, Blacks, Blue & Green-winged Teal, a Pintail, a Gadwall, a couple of Redheads, a couple of Cans, at least one Wigeon and a few Goldeneyes. Never got a band from a Ringneck or a Scaup.
