This is my first year duck hunting, 2 so far... But loads of fun.

My question is, are breast fillets with pelet holes in them ok to eat? The first duck was ok, but the second has a few holes in the breast. Should this be removed or just cook it up?

Just make sure the pellets have both an entry and exit. It feels bad if you don't. I find with grouse sometimes, larger pellets push in feather/down into the holes too.

You probably have to use non toxic shot right?

I actually saw a small metal detector for scanning your birds and game in a magazine or something the other day and thought.. damn, what a stupid lazy idea... then a minute later..Damn.. why didn't I think of that..

When I was a kid my mom ate a grouse my dad shot with a 12 gauge and 7.5 shot and she bit a pellet and didn't start eating grouse again for years until I was hunting and filleting them out nice and checking every piece. I would tell her I was using a .22 even if I wasn't. I just moved to larger shot and really checked.

Those breasts are still fine to eat as long as:
-you don't leave pellets in the breast to bite down on later (one day it will cost me a tooth!)
-you slice open the channel a bit to make sure there isnt feathers etc carried down into it (which you definately won't want to eat)
-there isn't bruising or congealed blood around the wound

I usually bend the breast over where the pellet hole is and give it a little slice to open up the channel. If its clean and doesn't have a pellet, ok, if not I keep slicing until its all good. :)

I clean out the holes but missed one once. Thatmetal detector I am going to check out. I've seen aot of geese in around embro lately. Is there public hunting there? Glad to hear you're ejoying the sport and spoils

Theres an oldtimer my dad hunts with alot, likes to do all the cooking....

and if you shoot a bird and put a pellet or two in the breast he will be sure to make sure that piece ends up on your plate

;)

I have been shooting grouse with my 10/22 for a year or two now, I even got one flying last year with it, but I went out at the beginning of the season and saw only one and I tried to lean on the sidekick to get a better shot as it looked agitated and it was still ~30-40 yards out and it flew away.. dammit.

So the next time.. I took a 30" full choked 12 gauge with me... I saw 4 or 5 and got three of them.. But I brought back 2 and a half. Now.. how much does a 30" full choke barrel spread shot at 10 yards again? did I have grouse fever and shoot a little too fast?

All the others were beautiful head shots with the shotgun.. I don't know what happened... :)
