Ducks Unlimited Sporting Clays Shoot

It's weird that Ducks unlimited would sponsor a clay shoot, but not take a stand and back the firearms community in regards to the OIC

I do remember a press release i read from them last year and they would not mention a thing about firearms

Just about preserving wetlands

There was much back lash and boycott from the Canadian firearms community against them

And deserrvedly so. A good portion of their suppport comes from hunters / outdoorsmen/women that the majority share are firearm owners. I know they lost a lot of support around here with everyone now standing behind Delta Waterfowl as they, unlike DU, came out swinging and in ademant opposition to the OIC.

I believe that DU being a non-profit org complicates their ability to say much when it comes to the political landscape.

In fact I think that they are prohibited from providing opposition (or support) to a political party. If it impacts their ability to remain a charity, I can understand why they made that decision.

At the same time - at least in my mind - it should mean that they also can't rely on us for their fundraising.

Especially when the Liberals have purchased their silence with a huge package of money. Kinda hard to bite the hand that feeds you (or have any sort ethics, apparently)

I was really angry at first - then sort of torn. if they speak out and are found to have violated something in the income tax act that gives them their charitable status, then it gest stripped away.......they wouldnt be able to continue the work that they do - which is an important thing.

Seems like a high risk (losing charitable status and being unable to meet their mandate of waterfowl / wetland conservation) for little gain for them. They only stand to lose favor with shooters like you and I.

I no longer support them because of their decision. But at the same time - I get it.

I get it too. What I get made me completely unwilling to support them ever again.

Support the volunteers hosting the shoot and while having a lot of fun you can help fund wetlands creation and conservation. Or not. I can say Galt is a world-class venue and the entry fee is remarkable value. I have other plans that date but myself and a number of other SxS enthusiasts are looking to attend the Delta shoot in August.

I enjoy shooting and waterfowling both but I will no longer support DU. DU Canada is very far removed from it's parent DU U.S. D.U membership stateside is still a majority membership of hunters and DU stateside takes a much different approach in terms of backing it's supporters. DU Canada is largely a membership, especially the volunteer committes of non-hunting people. It's the reason I left the committee I was involved with years ago. It was also the last year I ever organized or attended any DU shoot or fundraiser. If I lived in the area I'd be all over anything that supported fundraising for the club itself but not a DU event. The $ I would have put into DU for wetlands conservation each year I now put into groups like the CCFR to fight the good fight to keep our firearms. Without having my shotguns there is no waterfowling or clays shooting so my priorities have shifted.

Ducks Unlimited can get bent.

The emails I received back from various higher ups when the controversy with them started told me all i need to know. They are all about the cash and are more than willing to sit in silence whilst Canadian firearms owners are being thrown under the bus.

I am a hunter and clay shooter and I guess I look at it a bit differently than most.

I am a member of DUC because of the work they do to protect our wetlands which ultimately puts more ducks over my decoys. I am a member of Delta Waterfowl because of the work they do on nesting and predator control which ultimately puts more ducks over my decoys. I am a member of the CSSA and CCFR because of the work they do to protect my gun rights which ultimately allows me to hunt and shoot.

I could care less what the CSSA and CCFR position is on protecting wetlands or on predator control just like I could care less what DUC and Delta Waterfowl position is on gun rights or hunting. Each organization does what they do best and we need them all if we want to continue hunting and shooting ... especially with the current government running our country!

Not really... there are orgs that support both and DU had lost the plot.

Agreed. I was a long time DU supporter and committee volunteer. Going into the 90's the demographic for DU Canada changed from a majority of hunters as the membership to a majority of for lack of a better term soccer mom's with a cause, much like tree-huggers and animal rights activists. DUC is so far removed from it's roots it's nothing like the parent organization any more where the majority membership is hunters geared to conservation. When the committee I was on became all "naturalists" who could not conceive of hunters being part of the picture I left and along with it my support of DUC. Oh they will gladly take a hunters-gun owners money but they have no interest in supporting them or their rights so as far as I am concerned they can go pound salt.

Will not support DU. Having someone from their Alberta leadership Participate in the Governments firearms advisory board was the final straw. Lets still remember. 10 and 12 gauge shotguns are still in large prohibited firearms if we follow the new OIC laws by the letter. Great work by that man advising his friends who gave his organization Millions of dollars, while screwing everyone else in the process.

DU can burn in the fiery pits of hell. They built a dam on an adjoining property and subsequently turned what was a small stream through my property into a 20 acre swamp, killing thousands of hardwood trees in the process. Now my flooded land is considered a protected wetland which it never was, it’s artificially made and to top it off. There’s not a damn goose nor duck that uses the thing.

To say I hate DU, would just barely scratch the surface.

SPANK nailed it. They are Duck Huggers - no longer hunters and haven't been for at least 20 years.
