Dud primers or other problems?

Not to high-jack........, but these issues coming up with these Tikkas sure have me
skratch'n Heuy, Leuy & Deuy?
Bolt shrouds popping off, the SCF with ftf and such?

Hope you find a solution to this problem Paul.

Did you use the press to seat the primers? The press gets dirty and oily and has been known to ruin primers if you don't clean the shellholders and its primer hole.
Not usually an issue if you handprime.

I use a Lee handprimer. One for small rifle and another for large.

I tried your method with the tape. Very slight resistance with 3 layers. 4 layers had noticeably more.

As suspected, you are sizing way too much. There should be resistance on 1 layer of tape (ball park each layer as 3 to 4 thou thick before compression)... 2 layers should feel like you hit a wall and the bolt should not even begin to close.

Of the cases already sized, when fired, there is a good chance the web area will overstretch and that could lead to separation... not good on a range, a trainwreck in the field.

Consider reforming the case length with COW fireforming and secondary shoulder to move the shoulder forward... or better, new case

Then go to a different way to bump the shoulder and size just enough for proper chambering.

Good luck...

Thanks to Jerry and all that replied. It looks like that is the problem. I have lots of brass on hand, new and used. This batch will be relegated to range use for load dev.

Will update with results when they come.

Looks like I have it fixed. Gave the bore a good cleaning last night and loaded up 15 rounds. No FTF in the bunch.

If the loads repeat, then it is powder charge related.

if not, then it is either shooter or set up or something rattling around on the rifle.

as you have shown, powder charge tuning can have a profound affect on your accuracy AND consistency. Test further and play around the best charge level in 0.1 or 0.2gr increments. if the shooter and set up is consistently accurate, you will see a difference on target.

Enjoy and glad you got that resolved.

Jerry
