dumb question 300win in a 300wby?

The big difference is that we don't fireform, usually, at max pressures. That can cause brass to split or induce head separation.

I know that the Ackleys were formed that way. If all is well and the brass properly annealed, I guess it works.

With the Ackleys and many other wildcats, there is an index either in the neck or shoulder which limits the forward movement in the brass AND keeps that case head firmly against the bolt face.

Headspacing off the belt or rim allows the whole case to move forward which can lead to the problems mentioned above. Especially, at elevated pressures.

25-35 Ackley??
Sounds interesting.
Much improvement in performance?

More than 400 fps! :)

The case capacity is drastically increased. Split necks are not a problem if one anneals first, but factory ammo can have a very high attrition rate.

Yikes,
Fortunately the rifle survived. I hate to guess what kind of pressures may have been generated stuff a .311 pill down a .308 hole!!

reminds me of an incident that a hunting partner had before I met him.....I ended up owning the rifle about 10 years later.....he accidentally stuffed an 8mm Mauser into an FN Browning Safari 308 Norma.....the extractor held the round against the bolt hard enough for the primer to fire....the .015 oversize bullet went thru the bore but it cracked the lower lug abuttment,..we Magna-Fluxed the action at the shop years later.......amazing how much a bullet will compress to fit the bore, isn't it?
