Dumb Question Burris inserts

I know this is dumb just seeking confirmation.

If I want to cant my scope 20MOA I should put a "+10" shim on the top of the rear ring and a "-10" shim on the bottom of the front ring, right?

if not please explain to my cold medication weakened brain what to do, thanks in advance.

The shims in the top of the ring do nothing... they just take up space and tighten down to the top of the scope...

If you want 20 more elevation you would place a +10 shim in the bottom of the rear ring and a -10 in the bottom of the front ring.
 
To gain elevation, place a thicker ring on the bottom of the rear ring, and a thinner insert on the bottom of the front one. Use matching pairs, front and rear. eg: +10, -10 in a ring. What you are trying to do is raise the ocular end of the scope, lower the objective, to gain elevation. As far as I know, the insert numbers don't refer to minutes of angle, but to thickness difference in thousandths of an inch. The actual minutes change will depend on ring spacing.

As has been previously said , you cannot mix and match these rings. In answer to the 20 moa, you can use two 0.010 offset rings the front ring will have the -0.010 half at the bottom and the rear will have the +0.010 half at the bottom. You could also use the standard front ring and a 0.020 offset in the rear with the plus half at the bottom. Bill.
 
On the topic of putting inserts in the top rings, it won't chainge point of impact but it can be helpful. For my scope, for the ring where -20 is on the bottom I have the +10 on the top, and vice versa for +20 and -10. This probably isn't necessary, but maybe this crappy MSPaint pic will illustrate what I mean. Essentially a +10 on top for the -20 will keep more space between the top and bottom metal rings, ensuring that they stay apart and the desired tension is arrived at. (And for the -10 on top of the +20, it just keeps things more symmetrical.)

The other thing is, I have my inserts slightly canted to give some windage correction so my scope's windage is centered, so in this case the inserts that are mostly on top do have some effect.
