Ok so here goes. I see folks cut down shotguns to be just a pistol grip and 18 inch barrle. Overall length of 26 inches. I'd like to cut down a single shot .22 to have a pistol grip and 18.5 inch barrel for an overall length of 27 inches. Is this still legal? As I interprit the laws I have read it is. Thoughts? Be a great rifle on the trap line.

When you are looking to dispatch an animal at four feet or less it's not so bad. Not gonna bench it and shoot fifty yards though lol. And thanks for the reply.

Depending on the province you are in, you could get a permit to carry a pistol...

I'd much rather carry something that's 10.25'' than something that's 27''...

An old savage single shot .22. And it would be sweet to have the ability to carry a pistol. However I can't see that being easy in New Brunswick. Ideally one day though.

in short, yes you can. I have a 10/22 with a folding stock and I sometimes shoot it just by the pistol grip. I'm a lefty so I can actually use the buttstock as a forward grip when its in the folded position. Fun for plinking.

Thats great but if it folds the barrel still needs to be long enough to make 26"
So you have a simple choice. Long stock and short barrel, short stock and long barrel, or mid length on both all to make NR 26" length.
What pistol grip are you looking at putting on the savage?

Can't speak for NB, but it is pretty straight forward here in BC. A wilderness ATC for trappers to use small caliber handguns isn't unusual.

Not a pre fab unit. The stock is not a straight grip unit but one with a pistol style grip. Think old school musket pistol. It's very comfortable. One handed to carry. So I assume shorter and lighter will just increase ease of carry or ability to strap to a day pack.

Either rate it gives me something to tinker with and I only use it for dispatching so a good gun to experiment on. :)

That may be something else to look into as well then Emerson. I can also use this for work however. Won't be able to get permits to carry hand guns for neussance wildlife in attics and backyards lol. Now that would be really sweet :)

Just buy a Henry Mare's Leg. It's shorter than the 26" that YOU need to maintain and for some crazy reason it's still considered as a non restricted.

There's also a .22mag stevens with a 13" barrel on the EE, a model they call the 'trapper'
Oh, I see Prophet River has the 22lr version as well.

All excellent ideas guys. Just this one hang up ... Lack of funds lol. In a perfect world all options would be sitting in my safe for use. I actually handled the Stevens trapper model in 22 mag Friday in a gun shop. Could not justify the 400. He wanted. The mares leg has always been an attractive little idea as well. Love that every where else considers thus a hand gun but Canada of all places lol.

The AR7 option is valid for transport but as a user gun on a trap line it would want to be already assembled. And that makes it as long as a regular rifle. So other than getting an ATC and using a handgun the Mare's Leg is the most compact option be it store bought or legally custom made.

They do show up fairly regularly on the EE for some reduced cost. They are awkward to hold for accurate shooting so I think the novelty wears off pretty quickly. But for a good part of what you're considering using it for I think it's the way to go.
