Actually, I thought it was "Armalite Rifle", but I don't claim to be infallible and I don't have a source document to back me up.

AR stands for Armalite, it was the standard prefix for all of Armalite's designs.

The AR15 was the 15th design. Other commonly known are the AR7, AR10, and AR18.
