Ok I am studying my RAPL for the test Sunday. I have questions about Single action, Double Action and Double action only.

1.Revolver single action=must pull back hammer each time to full #### position to fire

2.Double action revolver=Pull of the tiggger does the entire sequence

Single action semi automatic=?

Double action semi=Able to pull back the tigger and fire in single action or can shoot in double action.

Double action only= Does the entire sequence every time

I should know this, I read a lot about pistols but I have never had a clear explanation yet.

With single-action semi-autos, if you load a full mag and drop the slide to chamber a cartridge, your hammer will be cocked, and a single-action pull of the trigger will drop the hammer, fire a bullet and cycle the slide, which leaves your hammer in a cocked position once again, allowing you to fire another round single-action, and another 'til the mag's empty.

If you have a round chambered and you safely de-#### the hammer, you will not be able to fire a round by pulling the trigger.

Awesome, thanks guys. So is that why with a Beretta 92FS Inox the first pull of the trigger is so long because the first shot is double action and then it switches to single action after that?

i had the same problem when i did mine because i just didn't really know pistols at the time so ill try to explain

you seem to understand the difference between a single and double action revolver so i'm not going to cover it!

now for pistols (or semi-automatic handgun)

You have a double action, example: a Beretta 92fs, you have 2 ways to fire it, you can press the trigger and it will fire in double-action (longer and harder pull) or you can #### the hammer and you will fire in single action like a revolver (shorter pull and not as heavy), once the bullet ejects and the slide comes back it automatically cocks the hammer every shot so you've only shot you first shot in double action and all the other ones are sigle action

a double action only would be something like a Glock, if you look at the gun there is no external hammer so you can't #### it. Every time you pull the trigger you activate an internal hammer, so thats why they are recognised to have a heavier trigger

finally a single action only semi would be something like a 1911, when the hammer is not cocked you can press on the trigger and it won't fire, so for your first shot you always have to #### the hammer and the slide coming back after each shot will #### it after for you

i hope that was clear enough

Ok one last question. With a double action semi. When you load in the mag and then rack the slide. Is it in single action or double action. Once I know this I know how it works for sure.

Single. But some guns...like SIG have "decockers" which let's the hammer down, so it goes back to double action if desired.
