Just wondering your preference for this application? We have quite a mix of terrains where i hunt and i wonder about the difficulties of seeing a mil dot reticle in all conditions.Am i better off with a good ole duplex and maybe a hand held range finder? Thanks.

What I have gone with is a range finder and a compensating reticle.

Zeiss makes the Rapid Z line which are probably the best right now in that regard. Damn dogs won't give you the time to size up on a mil-dot anyways so determining your approximate ranges before hand is a big help.

You calibrate the reticle through the magnification range and your load specifics on the Zeiss website.

These reticles will allow fast target acquisition and be easier to use on hold overs than a mildot.

My $0.02 of course.

Yes i forgot about BDC reticles.I have a burris on one of my deer rifles with a ballistic plex and it works well. That's what draws me to a burris 4.5-14 for my .204 for coyotes.I don't know what the Zeiss costs but i would bet it is more than i think i need to spend for the purpose.I am thinking hard on a conquest for another of my deer rifles though.

The prices aren't terrible, what is your budget?

I have a Leupold FX 6x42 with the LR reticle like this. It works out good for me. I'd say you could get a 3-9x40 VXII with this reticle and be in budget and have a great scope.
