Duracoat, air brush or spray gun?

I use one of the regular airbrush kits you find in the craft shops for ArmaCoat. Its the one with the little glass jar. I've tried both of the two you are looking at and found the simple craft shop one works best and is easiest to clean. Just make sure you have extra propellent or use a compressor.

I use a gravity feed HVLP gun. Don't know why you started a new thread though.

BUT, benefits of the HVLP gun over the airbrush is that you can control the shape and size of the paint spray from horizontal to vertical, which can minimize overspray.

Plus you can get better coverage over a wider surface

i used the HVLP when i did my duracoat job and it worked wayyy better than the airbrush that came with the kit.

i use an air brush, spray guns are great if you want to paint larger things like cars. i think it's overkill to use a spray gun on a firearm, plus it's nice to have more control over your painting with the air brush. it's more for detail.

I haven't used the Duracoat product, but I did refinish a pistol using a Cerakote finish. The frame I sprayed matte black using a airbrush with no problem. However the slide I sprayed with the 'Stainless' colored Cerakote which seems to have a higher percentage of solids and the airbrush clogged frequently --- I switched to the princess auto mini hvlp spray gun, and it worked very well.

Hope this helps !

well, a mini hvlp spraygun like i used has about the same spray pattern as an airbrush, but it's gravity feed which i prefer. you are right that a regular sized spraygun would be overkill though. in the end i don't think it makes a difference so long as you dont use a POS $15 airbrush.

agreed. when I purchased the Duracoat kit i cheaped out and bought the POS airbrush. It is worth the money for a better quality air brush. getting paint splatter all over your firearm is not cool :p

I like duracoat, it's surprisingly very resistant to normal use and doesn't chip if you hit your firearm on a hard surface. 2thumbsup!
