Duracoat camo kits --*Completed *Pics added!**

Looks really good. On a scale of 1-10 how hard would you say it was to do?

1 being the easiest.

I'd say it is rather easy, maybe a 4.

But time consuming? I'd give it a 9.

combine the taping, getting the equipment, setting up the tools, hooking up the components, mixing the paint, applying the stencils, painting, dry time, cleaning the airbrush between coats, and removing the stencils, it is a big job.

It took me 3 whole days to just to the painting part and that was AFTER i had taped everything.

All in all I'd say this job was a combined effort that took a couple weeks!

its not like I drove down to Canadian tire, grabbed a couple rolls of masking tape and some spraypaint. I had to get the cleaner, tape, xacto knives, airbrush, plastic sheating, all the duracoat stuff, gloves, mask, etc. I had invested a lot of time and money into the project.

worth it? definitely, for someone who likes to get their hands dirty and be constructive rather than watch TV i had a great time working on it.

Just an FYI.

I just heard back from Remington Customer support.

My question:

I am trying to find out how the surface of the SS barrels are finished.

Are they coated with anything or is it a straight beadblast?

Remington's answer:

The only stainless steel barrels with a coating would be the XCR guns, the others such as the BDL SS or the SPS stainless will be a straight bead blast.

combine that with a response I got back from the man himself at Houts Enterprises who told me that the bead blast on the SS is sufficient enough for painting without having to sand or blast.

I'll be over to see the rifle on Sunday so I'll see how hard the finish is after a week.

just waiting on the accu-shot stuff still

Have the clear coat

my bolt is prepped for painting.

so soon as the stuff comes in the mail i'll get on painting and should be ready to put back together next week

Just recieved a Duracoat kit from Lauer Custom Weaponry in the states. Came with airbrush, hoses, chemicals plus colour agent. A bit expensive, $140 + duty.

Ok..

All done! now just to wait till the weekend for it to harden enough for me to put it all back together. I decided to only give a light OD coat on the bipod and monopod as it would have taken me too long to cadpat them plus I might want to switch them onto another rifle eventually.

The biggest pain in the ass so far now has been prepping everything for the clearcoat.

All of the stencils and masking take left a lot of tape film over everything and it was a pain in the ass to remove. After wiping it all off with my finger, clothes, and eventually a light alchohol based cleaner did the trick. Took my most of the today and last night to do.

The Clear matte coat does a great job of reducing the glossy finish, more than I expected really.

I bought some 1500 grit sandpaper but now it looks I won't need it after all. I did though get a couple blotches of clearcoat on some spots when I started to spray but I should be able to lightly sand them down evenly on the weekend.

So, pics to come soon!

I still have a little bit of black and light green left and a whole little bottle of hardener here too.

Ok done and put back together!

There are a little errors where I put on too much clearcoat but you can't tell in the pictures

Overall I'm really happy with it.

After taking the pics I took it back to where I store it and put the scope back on. I won't be painting the scope simply because I don't want to permanently tie it to the rifle, so I will be wrapping it with Cadpat fabric instead. Did a test of it and it looks really good.

Don't put it down, you'll never find it. :D

If I had a nickle for every time I've heard that......... :p

I will add, you did a WAY better job of representing CADPAT than Duracoats attempt.

No s**t eh!!?? Duracoat's product image isn't only bad it totally misrepresents the actual paint colours. I was going to call them and tell them to do a new picture.

Not that I actually wanted the colours in their ad photo as I new it probably wasn't right. I much prefer the colours that actually come with the set.

rediculous really.

I'm just suprised that they knew enough to do cadpat, but not enough to have any idea what it really looks like and how to do a photo with the proper colours in it.. it is either a picture of what the colours were in prototype or just a bad white balance or something
