I heard from a friend of a friend that knows a guy....
That the Canadian Army will be going to Ruger Mini30 s (7.62x39). Apparently it has to do with the "new" piston craze and the ability to scrounge ammunition while in Afghanistan. Canada doesn't want it's soldiers to be the only ones without a piston rifle. Rumour has it the 7.62X39 mm is actually used as currency there, the same way we use pennies here.
It's part of the new Canadian Afghanistan financial initiative program. Even taking into account that they'll have to fire 200 percent more rounds to make the same hits, it's still considered more cost effective.

Your so wrong man, Norinco has won a single source bid to supply SKS's to the Canadia army, they are making a copy of the Tapco stock and supplying Tasco red dot for them, not to mention they won the bid to suppy 4 billion rds of ammo with the rifles. I have heard rumours that we will be replacing the Inglis's with Nork Torks, but nothing concrete yet...

I heard that rumour earlier. However as I understand it a poll was done, and the results showed that the SKS was too scary with that fold out bayonet. Also people had fond memories of the A-team and the Ruger's inability to cause any casualties no matter what. As a result the Ruger was deemed the more politically correct rifle and since it's manufactured in the United States our dollar has a high impact. The good news for soldiers is the fact that the safety has been deemed unnecessary (further cost savings, and simpler manual of arms). The rifle is considered safe even when being fired (see A-team re-runs).
